The Commissioner
@bc I feel like an insufficiently_thoughtful_person. bc
@Commissioner GordonWhen I first started out on the boards, I had a terrible habit of quoting the wrong person or mangling names. (I still screw up with multi-quoting and have to regularly use the Edit function) The Commissioner, mysterio and TheWatcher

Popular Post southern cross
Think this might be the only raw book in better condition. Most of the pre hero TTA I pick up I'm looking for the cheaper good to very good range raw so I can happily read them without worrying about damaging them. *Bronze age fan*, mysterio, KirbyJack and 3 others

Kind of like a "here's the seamy underside Marvel doesn't want to you know" kind of thing. I hope it's not the case. Just finished reading "The Secret History of Marvel Comics" 99% of it is pulps & magazine related (I think PHMs got one paragraph). The artwork is simply amazing to a pulp newbie like myself - the masterful work of Cardwell Higgins & Peter Driben was totally new to me. Never realized how prolific JW Scott was either, always liked Norm Saunders. Jack Kirby's pulp work got about 40 pages of coverage Joe Simon got his due as well. They have several of the early Stan Lee 2-page text stories in it. Sometimes it was hard to keep track of the different companies that they devised to cover legal & financial obligations. Definitely had me thinking of a mafia-type organization at times! Learned some new terms like "shudder pulps" (ahem, Mr. Schomburg ) There is a good bit of Martin Goodman bashing, not many pot shots at Stan. Maybe bashing is the wrong term as there is quite an extensive appendix to back up the authors claims. Goodman seemed like an old school businessman, always worrying about where the next buck could be made and not who he used to make it. Was pleasantly reminded of work that Matt Baker did for World of Fantasy 17 (The Brain Pickers) and other PHM titles. The artists section could easily be expanded to a book on its own. It was cool to see that the pulp titles were re-used in so many PCH titles and how the numbering sequences were bastardized from pulps to comics and back. Really comprehensive & enjoyable read - thanks for the recommendation all ! -bc Edited July 29, 2019 by bc typo #3,982 TheWatcher, KirbyJack, porcupine48 and 2 others

OSPG 22 has a very extensive write-up on the history of the Atlas Implosion & PHM titles as well. This is the one that really got me addicted. I will caution that several of the charts showing what issue is produced by month do have errors. I created my own spreadsheet based on this data and had to correct it over time. Hey @KirbyJack - is there much difference between these two write-ups? -bc Hey @KirbyJack Ever look into this ? Every boss is going to have some ex employees that didn’t like him or that didn’t like being bossed around. Now take that boss and make him incredibly famous and likely quite wealthy to boot. The sour grapes factor only ramps up. The only reason there aren’t more books along those lines is because no one would find a tell all about the office machinations at Fifth Third Bank to be very interesting Edited July 30, 2019 by Bronty bc
Popular Post Bronty
Hey folks first time in a long time. I scaled back my high grade PHM almost completely but I've kept all the mid grade readers as I love the books. Sold the nice ones against my better judgement when I needed money for whatever else it was at the time.
