Aussie publishers breaking into the US market..

7 posts in this topic

I was flicking around on ABC's iView last night and I stumbled across a two-part documentary on Gestalt Publishing and their attempts to break into the US market via SDCC with books from Aussie creators.

I found it really quite interesting... and figured most of you, like me, would be interested in pretty much anything to do with comics.

If you'd like to see it, here are the two links.

I think episode 1 expires in about 5 days or so:

Episode 1:

Episode 2:

Each episode runs for about 30 mins.

Cheers,

Dan

Just the chap I was thinking about - did you find out which is the best type of shelf to get from Bunnings to display slabs on the wall?

Thanks

Hey Beige,

I had a friend going to IKEA in Logan, so I got them to pick me up a small stack of these:

I went to Bunnings last night to grab the stuff I need to fix them to the wall, so I'll do that and post up some pics.

Bunnings have pretty much the same product for sale, but they charge 100% more:

Given Bunning's price match guarantee, you could try them to see if they'll beat the IKEA price ($15). They seem an identical product in the photos.

Hope that helps! :)

Seems like Japan is the only nation with any luck breaking into the US market. So many great Euro comics go untranslated, some of the best comics in comic history. We like our super heroes and if it isn't a super hero it's an uphill battle. If it's not a superhero and it's not domestic so the vernacular is slightly different than ours even worse. Too bad, I believe that comic Eeek is out of Australia. I bought the floppies, which were really thin squarebound comics, and then the trade that was published by Asylum. I think an Aussie creators best bet is to submit to an American publisher and hope for the best.

You're probably right... and maybe digital (Comixology etc) is a good way to go with that.

Sad though that it needs to be from a US publishing house to have any form of success... I wish our favourite industry had more success outside of the big 2.
