Russ Heath Survivor Series Round 1

Welcome to the SURVIVOR SERIES for Russ Heath comic covers!

 

 

In my previous thread, I had asked people to nominate their favorite Russ Heath comic covers. I've taken every one of those covers and included them here in this post. The poll is at the bottom of this post. The goal is to determine the greatest Heath cover of all time. You decide what makes a cover "great". To quickly reduce this to the best of the best covers, we will be voting off our 36 least favorite covers from the list provided. There are a total of 116 covers to start from.

 

Remember, we are voting for the ones that we do not like. Well, our "least favorite", as I mentioned before.

 

These rounds will last 48 hours each. We'll vote off 36 in round 1, 30 in round 2, 25 in round 3, 10 in round 4, 5 in round 5, 5 in round 6, and then pluck off one per round until we have our champion.

 

Even if you're not a Russ Heath fan (yeah right), you can still vote away some covers that you're less keen of. (thumbs u I really hope everyone can participate.

 

Chit chat is welcomed and encouraged, so please express your thoughts as the rounds progress.

 

I know this is a lot of books to look at and vote off, so I thank you in advance for your participation.

 

Tip: Some folks have two windows open when voting, one to look at the pretty pictures and one to click the checkboxes on the poll. If you hover your mouse over the pictures, you'll be able to see the name of the book.

Yeah, it's a tough job choosing 36. Takes some time that's for sure. I click on the thumbnail to see a larger version, then I cycle through the others and start picking away.

I would suggest choosing 10 titles at a time instead of this amount.

But on the bright side, although I was always a fan of Russ Heath, my appreciation has gone up a bit looking through all of those covers. A couple I wasn't aware of. Very cool! (thumbs u

Nice! In my opinion, Heath did his best work on War comics, Not Sea Devils AND DEFINITELY NOT WESTERNS. All the art was good though.

That's an interesting take. Some of those Heath western covers are every bit as good if not better than some of the war covers.

Nice! In my opinion, Heath did his best work on War comics, Not Sea Devils AND DEFINITELY NOT WESTERNS. All the art was good though.

 

First and foremost, I'm a war comics guy, but I cannot ignore the beauty of the other covers. A few of those westerns are really fantastic, but should be viewed at full size. In fact, all of these should be viewed at full size, to truly be able to appreciate Heath's genius and work.

 

The Sea Devils, IMHO, are incredibly gorgeous.

 

I believe it'll come down to a war book and a sci-fi book, with the war comic winning.

I'm surprised the Frontier Western 5 is getting so many votes. It's one of my favorites.

I have a clear front runner, Marvel Tales 130.

 

Then, as with most trying to decide, it gets real difficult between the All American Men of War, Our Army at War, Fighting Forces, G.I. Combats, Sea Devils & Showcase. Pretty much everyone of those are great.

People will eventually talk about which issues they like and don't like. Perhaps go into why a certain cover makes them excited...,whatever. Don't shy away from talk.
