DAN DIDIO NAMED DC UNIVERSE EXECUTIVE EDITOR

After two years as vice president — editorial, DC’s Dan Didio has been promoted

to vice president — executive editor, DC universe.

DC President and Publisher Paul Levitz said that, in the new position, Didio

will oversee the DC universe editorial imprint, which handles the adventures of

such characters as Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman. He will also help develop

new titles for that section of the publishing company.

Levitz said, “Dan has brought great energy and love of our characters to his

work on the DC heroes and is already making an important difference in the

creative direction of their world. We’re pleased to recognize his contributions

with this promotion and look forward to an even more exciting DC universe in the

future.”

Prior to joining DC in January 2002 as vice president — editorial, Didio was a

freelance story editor and scriptwriter for Mainframe Entertainment, where he

worked on such series as Reboot and War Planets, before being promoted to senior

vice president, creative affairs, overseeing all of Mainframe’s properties. He

has also worked for both CBS and ABC; at the latter network, he was executive

director of children’s programming.

Is this the DC equivalent of Marvel putting Quesada at the helm? Who is this Didio guy?

No idea. I thought it was interesting as he used to head up the children's programming for a TV network. Maybe he will do some things to gather more new readers.

He's been in essentially the same job (Levitz' #2) for a couple of years now. Not a whole freakin lot of difference between

vice president — editorial,

and

vice president — executive editor confused-smiley-013.gif

I think Didio has been credited with being a driving force behind things like Identity Crisis, the revived Teen Titans and Outsiders, and the Jim Lee turns on Batman and Superman. As something of an outsider, I think Didio is a good counter-balance to the head guy, since Levitz has been an overgrown comics fan all his professional life.

Dan Didio joined DC Comics in January of 2002 as a relative newcomer to comics. Not that he hadn’t been reading them or following them, but he came into an executive slot at DC with no previous experience in comic publishing, management, or even creation. It was a risk that caused more than a few raised eyebrows.

Two years, nine months later, Didio is a well known name, even revered in some circles as the man who lit the fire under DC Comics to shake up the venerable comic publisher, and give the whole core “DC Universe” line and top to bottom shakedown and evaluation. Chief among Didio’s tasks, he signed dozens of creators to exclusive contracts, guaranteeing him a talent pool for the future, as well as placing some of these top creators (as well as fellow VP, Jim Lee) on the company’s top properties. Wizard named Didio its first ever “Man of the year” in 2003 for his work on the DC Universe, and, given the announcement of his promotion to Vice President — Executive Editor, DC Universe, it’s not just the outside that’s noticing Didio’s work to date.

Just prior to the announcement of his promotion, Newsarama had an opportunity to sit down with Didio to talk about a variety of topics.
