ChicksCosmiComics
Can the original 1972 cover beat this special reprint's Man, that's horrible and they removed everything that made the original cover special. From a different perspective, the edited removal was in good taste, as the original all too campy cover are filled with old fashioned 1970s sleazy elements, I prefer this one better, a power man logo in place of luke cage would be even more ideal. And this clean looking reprint beats all the old beat up read issues hands down, and pricewise too The sleazy stuff IMO is what made it cool

Luke Cage (I still wonder what his real name is?) is a street- hood criminal who got framed for selling coke, then became a super-mercenary for hire (based on Shaft) investigating drug dealers, thieves, murderers, pimps and other thugs. How the heck you can attempt to "sanitize" that?

jools&jim
...old beat up read issues... The original cover is very much of its time, which is to me at least what makes it desirable. I'm guessing that the only reason it was "cleaned up" is because the reprint was packaged with modern "Luke Cage" action figures, some of which would have been displayed in mass market retail toy aisles frequented by the kiddies, where even comparatively tame (and mostly oblique) visual intimations of booze, gambling, strippers/prostitution, and police brutality may have offended...somebody. Who knows? Anyway, yeah...gimme that "old, beat up read issue" any day!
OveraboundingMint
Business agenda aside, I respectfully disagree with the conspired view, the reprinted redux cover is more dignified and more timeless in theme as a superhero 1st issue. Power added to powerman like never before. On the merits of visual appeal, I will take the reprint over the original, cheaper or not.

I however think the original cover is much better and it gives the cover more of a feel of what luke cage was going up against. The reprint is to plain for me. Oh maybe because it looks new ? Of course that and reasons aforementioned, and considering that the people doing the comics then did not foresee that the character would become power man by #17. So the edited change in the reprinted cover makes more sense. And there's also the price factor, when ya can get an almost mint reprinted copy at 1/100 of the price of a slabbed 'near mint' (mostly VFs) copy. Those who have unclouded eyes can see for themselves well enough. No need to argue further

vaillant
Besides what you said, "Power Man" is such a generic name – and we already had the Marvel character with the same name. "Hero for Hire" was a great name, and it’s still how I recognize and cherish Luke Cage. Either that or "Luke Cage", in Italy it was simply "Luke" (with the specification "eroe a pagamento", which means "hero for hire" in italian). I have now my copy in hand, as I have scanned it I must remember to post it. (thumbs u

Just take a look at the cover and you righteously see the historical moment it originated in. By removing the additional artwork they removed an essential part of the narration, and it is also done quite badly graphically speaking: without any adjustment to make it work, and without proper balance. vaillant
Besides this, "campy" to a non-american means very little. And the Village People were "campy", not Luke Cage…
