Anyone hear from Bob Beerbohm lately?

784 posts in this topic

If I were Matthew, I would not be thrilled to see this thread taken over by warm and fuzzy recollections of yesteryear. Perhaps until his books or refund materialize, a different thread would be more appropriate. 2c

This. First Mitch calls the guy a liar. Then he's still insinuating something is amiss and that Zaid should set the record right. Now, he's outright hijacking the thread, meant to get this guy's money or books to him, and trying to regale us with stories of what a great and valuable guy Bob Beerbong is.

You are truly a piece of work, sir.

Somebody should set the record straight, and I think Mark that should be the person to do it…..as to the timing of the resolution of the problem.

Maybe records should be straightened after the resolution has occurred. I think that's enough grandstanding, Mitch.

Since it's story time kids, here's one...

At SDCC last year, John Hauser got very animated when discussing BLB. He related that at a Kansas City Convention one year, the dealers started arriving early to set up their tables but they couldn't gain access because a van was blocking the ramp.

More dealers started showing up in the lot, and more were getting angry. They banged on the van, but no one answered.

After another hour, everyone was at their wits end. BLB then steps out of the van, having apparently just woken up and stretching. When the other dealers swarmed him, he just went into his usual schlep routine and started unloading his material. You see, by blocking everyone else overnight he was first in line.

Since we're all gathered around the campfire, another story kiddies? OK...

Hauser also spoke about a multi-day convention in the old days that BLB also happened to be at.

BLB had no hotel room, having slept in his van, and asked John to use his hotel room to take a shower. Hauser said he really didn't want to, but relented and gave BLB his key.

At the end of the day, Hauser went to his hotel room and saw that BLB had moved in. Even worse, BLB had commandeered the room's phone and refused to let Hauser use it because he (BLB) was expecting some sales calls.

After a few hours, Hauser was tired and yet had some personal calls to make and so he told BLB to give him the phone or he'd kick his arse.

BLB gave up the phone and went promptly to sleep on his free night's bed.

One more story if you insist...

At yet another convention, BLB came over to Hauser's table and sorted through his stock. BLB picked out $800 worth of material, and said he would pay John later, then wandered back to his booth.

By the end of the con, BLB hadn't paid Hauser who then confronted him. BLB claimed he sold the items for $600 and therefore John could take $600 worth of material in trade from BLB's remaining items.

Hauser was incensed, and asked for his money. BLB claimed he didn't have any money. With little recourse since the show was closing, Hauser selected a few books from BLB's stock and left.

It worked out for John in this case because he CGC'd the books and sold them for $1,000.

Score one for the good guys.

Isn't it just great sharing these hobby memories?

When I hear such warm and fuzzy stories, I want to curl up in front of a nice roaring fire with some hot cocoa. And then watch a rainbow sunset while riding my unicorn named precious as anything he eats is regurgitated as gold bullion.

Keep 'em coming, Steve! You have us rolling over here. This has all the makings of a hilarious comic.

By popular demand, the last story Hauser told me at SDCC...

Two multi-day conventions were in close proximity to each other, BLB had registered for a table at one of them, and so setup his booth there.

Apparently that show was rather slow so after 1 day BLB packed up and left, setting up the next day at the second show.

The first show's organizer tracked BLB down and confronted him to pay for the table he had used the prior day. BLB refused to pay the man, insisting that he was never even setup at his show.

Oddly enough, BLB had the program from the first show at his new booth location and the first show's organizer saw it. This fellow picked it up and showed BLB that he was listed in the index of exhibitors, and demanded payment or else.

BLB paid the man.

Score another one for the good guys.
