FF 52 and ST 123

The FF 52 is very flat and clean except for the top edge overhang. BC has a printing crease.

ST 123 has a small tear (and munch) at the top staple, top prong. Rest of spine looks good. Bottom staple is normal. From the inside, the staple tear is not really visible. No creases

the wear on the top edge overhang on the FF52 does not show in the scan so maybe I will take a photo tonight

Thank you. Here are the photos I took to show more of the top edge overhang and the wear on it. I guess that's what they used to trim off back in the Wild West days. What do you think CGC would give this?

Beautiful 52 James! (thumbs u Considering how hot this book has gotten, and how black the blacks are, I would definitely slab this one.

 

Personally, I don't think the overhang is an issue - that's how the books were printed, and that's how they should look.

 

I'll go along with the 9.0 - 9.2 crowd.

Thanks David. It's just that the overhang has a lot of color breaking from being pushed inward. What do you think about the ST 123?

The ST 123? It is a moderate staple tear, and as you represent is limited to the outside of the cover. There also appears to be a small spine crack just above it. I think the others have nailed it at 7.5, with a slight .5 chance in either direction depending on the severity of the bias of the grader toward staple tears.

I looked at the photos and stick with my 9.0 and 7.5 grades. On the FF52, look at the very bottom edge of the front cover and the lower right corner. That keeps it at 9.0 IMO.

FF 52 - beautiful copy. Isn't this tough to get in high grade due to the black cover? Anyway, I am going with 8.5-9.0.
