I've just ordered some cheap holiday reading. This time I am definitely going for nostalgia. I don't remember the Moorcock story but have read the others before. The Diary of a Nobody is funny (and was written in 1892!). Cider with Rosie was a textbook used in English Literature classes back in my schooldays. This looks like a 1960s first edition of the paperback version. The hardback came out in 1959. Oddly in the States the book was clumsily entitled "Edge of day: Boyhood in the West of England".

 

 

 

 

I purchased Two for Tanner simply because it was very cheap and it had a Thorpe & Porter sticker front and centre. Thorpe and Porter imported Marvel, DC, ACG, etc etc comics into the UK in the 1960s and 1970s and perhaps brought over even more paperbacks too. Usually they put the price stickers on the rears of the paperbacks. I never understood why they didn't put their ink stamps and stickers on the rear of the comics too rather than defacing millions of issues like they did with this example of a Lois Lane.

While the car was in for routine maintenance, I was able to browse the delightful bookcases of Kayo Books.  Maria Mendoza and Ron Blum are the charming owners.  Will relocate down the block by the end of the year.

A pair of sleaze covers by Bonfils. At his peak, Bonfils produced fifty covers a month.

Book on the left was found on the Kayo Books Instagram account.  I called up Maria and the book was mine. I love the covers and Bonfils ability to capture dynamic movement.

At one time, I owned an original Vargas Girl published in Playboy.  Female friends thought I was a sleazy guy.  I told them if it costs less than $5, then it’s porn, anything over $5 is art. Had to sell the Vargas at 200% profit to landscape my house.

I have a large number of Bonfils covers from the Greenleaf/Ember/Leisure publications.  Some pretty stunning covers in there!

Speaking of Kayo, I managed a slight upgrade to this killer Maguire cover from their website last week. It's not a common one in any grade and this is the best I've managed to find so far.

Today's book.  This gives me all of the "Murder of the Month" issues before the title became Murder Mystery Monthly with #5.  Also showing off a Shadow digest I got last week, since I figure it will interest people here with the Woolrich and MacDonald stories.

Reminds me of over four decades ago, when I shared an office with a hippie from UC Davis and a mechanical engineer from Berkeley.  They now call it “quiet quitting”, but we old timers call it “goofing off.”  We had the boss from hell, so when the boss wasn’t interrogating or screaming at us, we read underground comix on the sly.  I had a large stash of undergrounds, since I regularly bought from old hippie, Gary Arlington.

The mechanical engineer loved issue 4, where they taught you to “grow your own.”😂

Just got in this hallucinogenic Clark Ashton Smith story in the April 1933 Wonder Stories. Cover and interior Illo by Frank R. Paul

 

I haven't picked up many pulps since the boom but I've picked off a few of the CAS appearances in Wonder Stories since they still are occasionally overlooked by sellers who have otherwise booted prices way up.

Stoked with this one. The scrape on the FC looks to be printing defect to me, but I'd be keen to hear what other people think.

Scrape? What scrape    If you're talking about that area at the middle spine with white coloring, I'd think that's either minor color rubbing or color skip from the press. Minor either way and nice book regardless

Over the moon on this very high grade copy of the November 1934 Weird Tales with the conclusion of "The People of the Black Circle" that arrived today. I have a nice copy of the September opener but still would like to hunt down the October middle issue.

Every time I look at this thread something else gets added to my want list. I just need a money tree or win the lottery and I'll be able to buy everything on my list. Great pulp!

Nice!  I've only got five Weird Tales with Conan stories, including the three parts of "Red Nails".  Not nearly as nice as your copy, though:

well I don't own the Argosys shown but did recently pick up this Harlequin (#193 Oct 1952) featuring the pulp hero who made many appearances in the venerable weekly during 1934 and 1935 (covers by John A Coughlin). George Challis = Frederick Faust aka Max Brand. Harlequin cover sig (lower left 'under' reading crease) reads 'Friede'.
