I looked that one up when you shared it in connections because I like it so much.  Let's just say the one copy I did find is not cheap :D

I'm not real creeped out by this.  He's perving, but she seems to know he's a clown.  Who's the artist, "Elaine?"

It's full of all sorts of great little details.

One sold at auction recently and bidding was aggressive. GOD BLESS ...

Not the crispest copy but appropriately rough for Harry Crews.  I like this novel but especially his Body and All We Need of Hell.  I haven't been looking for newer pbs but had to have a copy as soon as I saw it, as I'm kind of amazed to see Crews in a mass market paperback like this.  The lit crowd never knew quite what to do with the guy, but he managed to build up a cult following in the rougher areas of readership.

An oddly cinematic cover - I don't think there were ever any actual plans to make a movie of the thing (and I'm not sure the censors would like it).

Can't quite make out the artist sig

Looks like "Gentile" for sure. Don't know the artist but you can dive around with it

I wouldn't rule out Charlton artist Sal Gentile.

The thick eyebrows and square-ish faces compute, and fitting to maybe graduate from the lowly comic books and get a paperback cover.

Just a guess (shrug)

Looks like he was in editorial at Charlton in the late 70s, wouldn't doubt you might dabble in some painting during the Connecticut nights :D

I can't draw too many lines between the simplistic romance pages I see at Heritage and this single painting (in a pretty realistic mode), but I wouldn't rule anything out, either.

He's apparently got some signed comics work, I'll see if the sigs line up hm

No lines drawn, just throwing out the only commercial artist with the name I could see in 5 minutes of looking.

The rest is a possible guess based on sometimes these guys do these things trying to move up from the lowly thing it was to be a comic book artist

Oh, no I appreciate the name, and it's absolutely a good lead.  Any hit at heritage or in same industry of illustration is good for a follow-up, but it's not him.  I just spent a bit cruising through his cover and earlier pencils repertoire at Charlton.  Even based on just the one Feast of Snakes cover and signature, I'm pretty much ruling Salvatore out.

OMG, Charlton, my eyes, my eyes!!!!!!!!

After a certain point it looks like Sal Gentile was pretty much just doing covers (he did dozens and dozens of em) with a bit of inking and lots of editorial (and apparently tweaking Sanho Kim's faces).

One painted cover from him in 72

and perhaps his finest work :D

The Charlton appreciation thread over in General gets grody, but they never get real, real grody.  I just thumbed through some rough *ss comix

The signature search was the next logical step but I did not want to do it lol

I figured your younger eyes would take the punishment better :makepoint:

Agree the sigs are way different but he had enough different ones I wouldn't completely rule him out but equally likely it's not him. Love the covers you showed. Susan Dey was :cloud9:for guys my age :)

Back then she was a cougar, but now I feel dirty if I admire her, same for Marsha Brady.  GOD BLESS ...

I was a bit surprised to stumble on some Ditko credits on some sleaze PBs on eBay, but it makes sense with him sharing studio space with Eric Stanton in the time period.  I'm told by a Ditko lover that he did a good amount of inking for Stanton.

There's a spread in Blake Bell's Strange and Stranger on the two.  It sounds like Ditko would get aggressively defensive in denying the work he did on these books over the years :eyeroll:

That's probably just Ditko's normal denial of anything that wasn't entirely his own vision rather than any desire to disassociate himself from sleazy books, though.

Depending on how you feel about reading on the computer, the book is in public domain and available at Project Gutenberg.  You can change the font size as needed.
