Seems like a weird pairing

About 2/3 of the pages are the Mundy.  I picked it up from Steve for the Willeford but might end up reading both.

There's so much awesomeness going on in those two covers, it's mind boggling together. I really wish Royal had flip flopped them like the Ace's.

As is sometimes the case with the paperbacks, this one was originally cut down by the publisher.  The modern release "The End of the Primitive" is restored to the original text.

I haven't read the original release, so I don't know what was cut only that it wasn't what Himes intended.

I love the vintage paperbacks but find instances where it's not the version I prefer to read first.  Even "complete and unabridged" doesn't actually mean complete and unabridged in some cases

I see they've got a version of The End of a Primitive available for checkout at the Internet Archive if you do digital, Jimbo.  One of the nice things about digital is you can blow up the text to whatever level is comfortable for reading.

I'll still be picking up the Signet edition if I see it in the right price and condition, would love to have it

Nice copy I picked up from Steve, most of the wear at the spine.  Love the idea of von Stroheim hacking out a novel for cash after being run out of Hollywood for being too difficult to work with/artistic and facing overdue alimony and child support payments.  There's a Beacon edition that's the first PB from a year earlier, but it looks pretty skinny.  Guessing it's abridged.  This one promises "every burning word"

Grabbed at auction recently, and I didn't expect to win with my max, just couldn't go higher without having the lights cut off. It's not mint, but it does have its strengths. GOD BLESS ...

A couple of super cheap non-fiction acquisitions -

Stemming from a lingering interest in the V-2 ever since I read Pynchon's Gravity's Rainbow.  Dornberger was brought to the US in Operation Paperclip and worked for the military industrial complex until 1965, avoiding prosecution for war crimes.  He was the Commanding Officer of the Peenemunde Rocket Research Institute that employed Jewish slave labor.  His role in targeting civilians in London is unclear.  I think it's the first pb, there's a 1954 Viking HC.

A couple of later mysteries, I was annoyed when  @goldust40 beat me to the Man-Killer/ Running Scared in @Surfing Alien's latest thread, so had to correct that, even if the copy isn't as nice.  And the Bloch is a high demand double in its own right that I'm very happy to finally get my hands on.

IIRC, this was the first Frazetta cover I ever purchased with my own money ... not this exact copy, which came courtesy of @Surfing Alien ... I had a collection of several dozen Frazettas in the mid 70's. Didn't realize he did comics until after I discovered his PBs. GOD BLESS ...

In today.  I really like the design on this one, I can't recall another double that goes quite so dark side/ light side on the artwork.  "George Sanders" is, in this case, a pseudonym for Leigh Brackett.

I tried to be a good citizen and watch the debate tonight, but five minutes was already too much.   F those clowns  

So I scanned some covers in.

Drug covers aren't really a collecting area for me, but jazz sure is.  This one makes me think of Chet Baker, believe Lowell showed this one, incredible design all around

And another H cover.  Lowell showed this one, too, over on Connections.  Crazy about the graphics, from the silhouette JD scene at the bottom to the red/purple/blue fade to the wild title lettering.

 

After I scanned a handful of covers I had to fill up the air compressor and blow out my scanner, bah.  Better for that hint of a red debris line to show up when scanning covers than when I'm halfway into a magazine

Some more, this first one was a freebie in Lowell's last sale, great stuff, a doppleganger theme.  You can take my wife, my face, but my dog?!?!?!  Have never heard of the author, but the blurbs are intriguing.
