What is 'spine stress' and how do I look for it? Is it the line or cracks that appear from the spine side of the book? How important is it that a comic book lay completely flat on a table? Is the cover and the outside of the book the most important part when grading (assuming no missing pages or writing inside)? Newer to collecting and trading and would like to have a better idea of what to look for in quality. Thanks for any advice!

single most important thing is the spine. that doesnt mean a good spine with a trashed front cover is better than a trashed spine with an immaculate front cover. Its just the spine is where most damage occurs, so it's a focal point. Kind of like checking out the hindquarters on a woman at a bar first to get an idea of her attractiveness. stress marks are the horizontal color breaks which occur near spine from turning pages/storing improperly. Usually near staples. spine roll is not good, but not horrible, and can be pressed. Yes the cover is most important part. a coverless book worth less than book with good cover and a wrap or two missing I believe.
