Why was John Carter of mars so underrated?

I bought the DVD when It came out, maybe I need to watch it again.

Do that it was a decent film that got panned before it was released.

I liked the movie, but it was one of disneys biggest flops of all time though, they spent like 400 million on a budget, and grossed like 175k

the problem was it was such a standard, re hashed story. a computer could have written it. there was nothing original in the dramatic elements-nothing. i still 'enjoyed' it but i wouldnt watch it again. mainly i liked the dude calling him 'virginia' and deja's legs.

and the fact there was no jar jar binks.
