STAR WARS #42

85 posts in this topic

This book and issue 68 are no-brainer buys right now.

I'm not sure about Star Wars 68. Lucasfilm just threw out all EU from the canon, so none of the stories in comics or books are considered canon. Star Wars 68 was already all but non-canon because the story didn't mesh with the Clone Wars interpretation of the Mandalorians. The story has a couple of panels with Boba Fett in it. The "Boba Fett" (Mandalorian) in the story is another character called Fenn Shysa. If people are spending big money on 68, then it is strictly on the cover alone, which is not even Boba Fett but the Fenn Shysa character, not because of the content of the story. I guess collecting the cover in this age of encapsulation is not unheard of though.

For my money, Star Wars 81 is the better cover and more significant Boba Fett appearance. It's also a degree more difficult to find in high grade, whereas Star Wars 68 is still in the sweet spot where the Marvel Star Wars comics have an abundant supply and are readily available in high grade.

Just my 2c.

The Empire Strikes Back was also published as part of the ongoing series, but was also published in various formats. The first was a paperback-sized Marvel Illustrated Version that shuffled the panels around to fit the smaller page, and also contained a very different looking Yoda in its pages. Since this collected volume was released prior to the film, the artists did not have the reference artwork of Yoda, so it was published as is. Once the film was released, the character was redrawn to the final version. The second version was an oversized Treasury Edition similar to the first film, but in only one volume. Finally the adaptation was published in issue 16 of a magazine-sized series called Marvel Super Special. This series published official comics adaptations of various films that were released at the time. All three volumes feature a cover by Bob Larkin.

Which is why i will buy the treasury every time i see one in great shape. The book is published first, but the treasury would be the first comic appearance in my book

I agree with everything you've stated here. I also think that many people will value these books just because they feature Fett on the cover. I bought all three just on that premise alone a long while back. SW 68 is a very iconic look for our man Fett. I would love to see people post which Fett cover out of all the ones that exist is their favorite. (thumbs u

I had won this auction a few weeks back:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/351046696287?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649

Today I had my first opportunity to go through the issues from this purchase and scan items for my database. I started with the higher numbered issues and worked my way down. Needless to say, initially I was disappointed, since the higher numbered issues had problems (rough corners, spine ticks, non-glossy covers, dirt on back, etc.) Then I got down to issue 50 and my anticipation began to soar.

Issues 39-44,50 are in terrific NM+ condition with little to no dirt on the back. In fact, this Star Wars 42 may be the sharpest raw newsstand Star Wars 42 in my collection (maybe as good as the CGC 9.6 I picked up last week on these boards. Thank you the_beyonder.) The other issues range from F+ - VF/NM. The 68 is probably a VF+. Issues 71, 72, 74, 83, 84, and 86 are in F+ condition. I could tell from looking at the different bags and boards, these comics came from various sources and are not originally from a single collection. Needless to say, the condition of the 39-44 and 50 made up for the weaker grades on the later issues.
