Where does one look for anime/manga OA?

8 posts in this topic

Where do you look? Or where do you find? The answer to the latter question: nowhere. If you do find some, it's likely a fake, or production material. Manga creators do not sell their artwork. It is a cultural thing, very frowned upon; it just doesn't happen. Plus, the payment system in Japan, royalties and rates, is far superior to comics in North America and there is zero need for extra income from the sales of originals.

But if you are looking, other than traveling through Japan and visiting shops, the best place for a North American to deal with would be Mandarake. Great reputation, plugged in.

When you consider how many pages of manga have been created in the last 70 years, the number of pieces to come to market would be...? One in One Million?

When those Akira page(s) (I believe there were 3) were donated and auctioned for the Tsunami relief fund... amazing, fleeting opportunity.

As irchooker said, it is very very hard and rare to find manga originals.

There were a few pages and originals for festival posters by Jiro Taniguchi in various auctions in Europe in the last few years. (maybe 2 posters and 3-4 pages, not much). I also saw a dozen pages from various unknown (at least to me) manga. That's about it.

For anime cels, it's far easier to find, and most comics original art auctions in France now include some cels (The demand is very high in France for these.) You can look at Artcurial auctions for example (but they organize few auctions, maybe 2/year).

One of the most recognized experts on anime cels working in collaboration with the auction houses is Benoit Spacher, whom you can find and contact through CAF. He is easy going and will probably be more than happy to help you in your quest.

Do you have links for the auction? Or an idea of what they sold for?
