Free Comic Book Goodness

13 posts in this topic

And other goodies...

Yesterday was Free Comic Book Day and today is May the Fourth be with You Day. My youngest son and I paid a visit to our LCS and picked up a few free books. Then the comic shop owner brought a long box he had just purchased...books weren't even priced yet. I love it when I get first crack at the good stuff. I was able to pick up an ASM 238 NM, an ASM 300 NM...dare I say NM Plus, Warlock 1 VF NM, and Marvel Premiere 15 VF. My son paid for the Marvel Premiere with his own money and is very excited to send it off for press and grading...it will be his first graded book. I plan to do the same with the other books at Phoenix Con next month.

The other quandary I have is that Herb Trimpe AND Len Wein will be at Phoenix Con...do I dare crack my Hulk 181 VF 8.0 for the signatures. It's the first CGC book Ive ever owned...my wife bought it for me for Christmas years ago so it has great sentimental value, and monetary value to boot. What if it drops in grade, even with a press. This is a rare opportunity to get these two gentlemen to sign this book...will it enhance the memory, or if it drops in grade will it take away from the memory. These are tough questions I cant seem to bring myself to answer. I am conservative by nature so to even think about doing this is crazy to me. Let me know your thoughts.

Til next time...

Interesting "dilemma". If I were in your shoes, given the circumstances I'd probably crack it open and get it signed. I imagine given the nostalgic value (gift from wife) this is something you wouldn't likely sell anyway, in which case having a "signed Hulk 181 slab given to me by my wife and later signed by Herb Trimpe and Len Wein" beats "an unsigned Hulk 181 slab given to me by my wife", even if the grade drops a notch which is probably unlikely.

Great feedback guys, and thank you. Today I am leaning toward getting it signed, tomorrow who knows. Man I wish there was a video on You Tube I could find on how to crack open these slabs (I will have to look up the one we made with Ronnylama, haha)!

Yeah I was stoked to find that ASM 300...its beautiful, and the LCS owner was tempted to send it for grading himself but was happy that it was going to me at least. Great guy, great books, amazing prices...can't ask for more than that. I'll do a follow-up journal next year when it comes back from CGC. :)

I'm on the get it signed side as well. I've cracked and re-submitted 2 for signature series and both retained their grade.

Those cases are too hard to crack open just take a knife around all side and it should pop right off and then you'll need some scissors to cut the comic from it's inner plastic protector.

Also, when taking the comic to get signed, I usually cut a hole in a bag and board so you don't have to take the comic out for the creator to sign. Then transfer it to a new bag and board once it's been signed.

I would never get Hulk 181 signed.

That's just me.

Crack it, get it signed. The more someone's signature blocks out Wolverine's face, the better.

Congrats on the Marvel Premier. I hope the boy loves it as much as he should.

Ron, you reminded me...I don't think CGC is gonna be there this year. I think Mike mentioned at ECCC that CGC didn't get enough business last year to make it worth it...which makes no sense to me because there are way better guests at Phoenix Con this year than there was last year, and this show is a lot bigger than the Amazing AZ Con and CGC was there in January. Must...get...books...signed pressed and graded. I wonder if they will at least have a witness there that can help me.
