Need advice on GRR ASM #1 1966 reprint

29 posts in this topic

Hi everyone -

I need some advice on a comic book. This is going to sound like one of those "I found it in my granpa's attic under an original copy of the declaration of independence" stories but it's true! I've read some of the posts here and you all seem like you might be the people to ask, so please don't flame me! (Or at least not EXCESSIVELY, some is OK. flamed.gif flame-kissed.)

Full disclosure: I'm not a comic book collector and I have only the bit of knowledge I've found online (actually I'm into old cars, but let's not get off-topic...), but the story is, I was volunteering at a library used book sale in a village near me and got to sort through and categorize lots of books and stuff that were donated for the sale, including some records. In the records was this record of The Amazing Spiderman. At the time I was working in the music field and was collecting spoken word stuff for a remix project, and this seemed like a neat thing for it so I set it aside and ended up buying it.

Well, the remix project never happened and a while ago I was looking on eBay to see if any junk I had lying around was worth anything and I put in the Spidey and 893whatthe.gif !

So anyway, I have a copy of the Golden Records reprint of ASM #1 from 1966 and I want to sell it but I'm not sure what would be the best thing to do. Now I know it's worth only a tiny fraction of a real ASM #1, but is it something that's worth sending to CGC to be graded? Do they even grade reprints? I keep seeing posts where people are very suspicious of books that are raw (by which I'm guessing means not graded or slabbed/bagged). Would selling it as is degrade the value in a collector's eye vs a graded/sealed comic? Does the record have *anything* to do with the value or is it all the comic?

The thing is in really great condition, by my layman's eyes. I know, "The thing's perfect!", the seller says, and then it comes back an 8.0, but I do think it looks good. And I do have *some* experience in old stuff, just not comics. The record is still in its plastic wrapping, just slit to get the record itself out, but frankly, I don't think the comic has EVER been out of the plastic. It just has that flat, undisturbed look that you just can't get when you put it back into the plastic, no matter how hard you try. (Not that I've tried! Oh, man, I'm gonna get flamed for that...). The record/sleeve looks great, too.

I'll include a scan and I'd like anyone's opinion or advice who's willing to give it. Hey, no shoving, form a line...I'll shut up now. 893blahblah.gif

Thanks.

Welcome to the boards.

Posting a scan would be a good place to start. The GRR would probably not be worth slabbing unless high grade (CGC 9.0 or higher). When the scan is up. I'm sure you will get plenty of grade opinions. 893scratchchin-thumb.gif

Looks slab worthy to me. My guess is 9.0 or better. thumbsup2.gif

You've basically got zero dollars invested, so cost of slabbing and two way shipping would be worth it. You'll get top dollar if it's slabbed. thumbsup2.gif

I dunno, I've never had it out of there. I'm afraid to touch it or screw it up somehow! Should I cut the plastic and give it a look-see? I know I'll have to remove it sometime to send it to CGC. What should I do with it in the meantime? Put it in a polybag? I'm kind of happy this isn't a REAL #1, I'd probably have a heart attack! This is a good "starter" freak-out!

I wouldn't touch it.

Just pack it up and send it to CGC like it is.

Be sure to give them written permission to open it up.

I think you'll be pleased with the grade. 893applaud-thumb.gif

So, he takes the record out and leaves the record cover with the comic? What do you think CGC will do with the cover? Send it back? screwy.gif

Just send the sleeve and the book, then? Would they send the sleeve back, do you think? (Answering his own question: Probably they'll do whatever you want if you pay for it) I just sent them an email asking if they would accept it this way. I'll post the answer when I get it.

You must be smokin' crack. If he is going to send in the book, put it in a bag and board! screwy.gif

Plus, the book is just shrinkwrapped against the record with no other protection. You think the book won' t move around? makepoint.gif

I had no idea it was a 33 1/3 rpm. foreheadslap.gif

I thought these came with a 45 rpm.

Get a bag and board. Don't send it in the record sleeve. thumbsup2.gif

Does it have the "fairy dust" sound when you are supposed to turn the page?

This is like the abacus of Leap Frog. cloud9.gif
