Help with some Asian Comic Digests?

8 posts in this topic

Can anyone tell me what country these are from? I assume they are Japanese based on the Yen value mark that is on the cover. They seem to vary in ages based on their look but also the prices are ranges are different.

Thumbnails can be clicked below for larger image.

They are roughly regular comic size width and height but digest sized volume. Each volume has some stories in full color, some b/w, and some in one color like red or blue.

I am not sure if they are the same series or different. A few of the covers are more intense than others. Most seem very child/family friendly.

Thanks for any help :foryou:

That's how manga comes in Japan. They're anthology series, I think they come out weekly. Lots of pages, with something like ten page installments on serialized stories, which if popular enough will be collected in the kinds of mangas we're used to seeing over here. These ones are pretty old though, and seem to predate the Western manga renaissance by a couple decades. Could be some good stuff in there, you'd have to ask a manga expert.

Many of the examples in the pix seem to be clearly Buddhist themed, and others indicate religious overtones as well.

Graphically they do seem to have a 1950s-1960s look to them.
