Please help me with a value estimation of this Comic collection

I'll be listing this on ebay in the next few weeks. I'd appreciate it if some of you could take a quick look through it and give me an idea of what the whole collection is worth. I appreciate the help. Thanks. - Matthew

Total Comics (1289 Issues)

I was born in 1983. I collected comics as a kid from the late 80's to mid 90's. I only bought them secondhand from a local comic store. Most were from the mid silver age (early 70's) to early bronze age (early 90's). I generally only bought comics in really nice condition (As a kid I only wanted the new looking ones, anything that didn't look new I threw out and had replaced, very picky kid) I was a bit of a completionist too when possible. I completed the runs of Rom spaceknight, ka-zar the savage, and 43 different mini -series sets all with anywhere between 2 and 20 books each.

With the exception of having thrown in a few books my mother gave me long after I stopped collecting myself (I lost interest around the age of ten), I have not touched these comics since the early to mid 1990's. They've sat untouched in my parents attic for somewhere between 20 and 25 years. They are 95% Marvel. Most of them are in VF or better condition (I'd say all the mini series issues are NM). Probably a few of the rom's are in the roughest condition as that run was a pain in the butt to complete. My best guess as to an average condition for this collection is VF give or take half a grade.

The last time I touched a comic book was in the mid 90's. CGC didn't exist. I didn't even know comic books could be graded. I didn't know nicer condition ones were worth more. I just knew I liked the new looking ones without folds and everything. Like I said, I stopped collecting at the age of 8-10 (I dont remember exactly). My grading might be off a little but I don't think so. Over the course of 5 years of collecting I spent roughly 3000 in allowance money on these. Time to see what they are worth.

I have 23,000 feedback on ebay from selling hardcover books, and pulps. They are my thing now. I haven't sold more then 10 pulp related comics out of the 60,000 transactions I've had. I am not in the comic book business. This is my entire childhood personal collection minus one book I'm keeping (An Action #1 1983 reprint with sentimental value).

The collection is about 50% bagged and boarded. And It currently takes up 4.5 long boxes. I'm guessing shipping will be in the 200-300 range in the u.s. depending on where you live. It will be many boxes.

I have no idea what is or is not valuable. I never paid attention to things like first issues, or first appearances so I'm sure there is plenty of expensive stuff mixed in with the junk. So please take the time to look through the entire list below.

I can look through a pulp collection or book collection like this in a few minutes and get a general idea. And would happily do so if asked. I can't believe there isn't someone who is a heck of a lot more versed in comic value than me that can't give me a ballpark after using up only two minutes of their time skimming a list.

Besides. Price guides are useless for bulk low to mid value books like this.

Enough from the peanut gallerys (which I'm sure this statement will just attract more). If there is anyone willing to give me a couple minutes of your time and shoot me a best guess, I would appreciate it.

Thanks. - M

I'll give it a run

A local dealer might offer you 30 cents per book

Prob less

I'm going 300

Yeah, assuming the Hulk #1 and the Silver Surfer #1 aren't the original #1's then $300 doesn't sound too crazy to me, although I'm not an expert on pricing a bulk lot like this...

Those actually look like those crappy "-1" issues Marvel did in the late 90s.

I'd say $200 to $300...there is a whole lot of drek in there. So much so that it seems like the collection is going out of its way to not include any keys at all.

have to agree on the overall assessments here just breezing through the listing. You may have spent 3 grand on this as a kid in allowance but so did a bunch of other kids with these books or baseball cards -- both equally way over produced and collected-- and because of this not rare nor very highly demanded.

I don't think anyone is trying to give you a snarky answer here-- it is just the way things are. I collected as a kid from around 10-13 years old using paper route money (3 routes) myself in the late seventies. The only saving grace was the time period and that I continued to educate myself during the process on how to care for the books.I bought almost excluseively straight from the racks. DId some flea market buying toward the end (pretty expensive) and when the price of books hit 40 cents-- that was the end for me on the collecting portion.

That is the other issue-- simply listing them-- even if they are highly sought is only a very small part of the valuation. You kept them in an attic-- terrible idea for comic books typically. (hot in the summer being the biggest issue) and that you haven't bagged and boarded but maybe half of them makes me think you are probably way more generous in your evaluation of their condition.

Sorry-- there is a reason most people here refer to these books as drek. Even your bronze age stuff is minimal at best. Seems like mostly Copper and modern to me with no real Keys (did someone look at yur books and buy only some of them? they took anything that was worth taking).

If you are that into selling on ebay-- I would suggest you group some of these together and find similar groupings on ebay itself. Scan some books and ask people to grade them on the forum for that here-- and that will help you grade the rest yourself. Then sell away -- consider it additional pulp stock. And make sure you get them re-bagged and boarded in the meantime in case you have anything worth a damn.

This isn't something I would want to list on eBay. Shipping costs are prohibitive on a collection of this size and quality.

The true value depends significantly on the actual condition, especially of the oldest issues. Unfortunately, you seem to have done an amazing job of avoiding nearly all issues of note/value from the titles and time period represented in your collection.

I'd say something between 65 and 130 bucks. Most of the books you listed are run fillers or 90s overrun. I don't think collectors (the people who will pay guide for books) will have interest in 99% of the collection. There may be a few books in there you could sell for full guide but even then you're only getting a couple bucks per book, not really worth your time which means you'll need to sell to a dealer for overstock. Most dealers will offer you a nickle a book. Maybe a dime a book if they're bagged, boardered, sorted and inventoried. A nickle a book is 65 bucks. A dime a book, 130.
