Spider-Woman isn't good for women when she looks like this

385 posts in this topic

Just rockin' along and *BOOM*, a firestorm.

 Here, maybe this will bump the Manara story from the newscycle. Some kid letting his Ray Bradbury imagination get the better of him. (tsk)

But a pet dinosaur?" said Alex's mother Karen Gray."I mean first of all, we don't have dinosaurs anymore. Second of all, he's not even old enough to buy a gun."

Well it is South Carolina, so perhaps the teacher wasn't aware that dinosaurs are extinct.

If they're good enough for Jesus to ride, they're good enough for lil' Alex to shoot. :sumo:

Guess: most of the guys on this thread speaking for women like they are one don't actually, you know, enjoy their company very often :hi:

It's misdirected energy of another type. Guys that are happy with that part of their life don't feel 'outrage' when they see a pic of, heaven forbid, a booty :o

I'm out :whee:

This statement is stupid, in its entirety and it's conclusion. Even reading it makes me feel more stupid, which is difficult, as I'm already pretty stupid.

Bronty is just trolling. And the fact that he's insinuating that there's a sort of status symbol in the quantity of women a man's been with just supports the point that I made earlier, that the larger issue is that the cover reinforces the attitude that women exist for male consumption, so it's not even a good trolling.

I stopped following this thread after page 2. Twenty pages later people are getting arrested for making believe that they are shooting dinosaurs. Did anyone talk about cosplay and sexual harassment in this thread as well?

Shoot man, this thread hasn't even covered the menace of hot hamster babes yet. (shrug)

Thanks Kia. lol

Actually you are projecting your own issues on there bud. :hi: I never said anything about quantity of women. I said frequency of company. My statement makes no differentiation between a man who has been with one woman 1000 times and a man who has been with 1000 women once. It just compared either of those guys to someone dates only (or predominately) Palmela. Not that there is anything wrong with Palmela.

Sorry you're not getting any btw ;)

Now Speedy had a more reasonable post above on the surface and I almost want to agree with a small part of what he is saying. But in a world where a 10 year old can watch his or her first facial or fisting video by tapping a few mouse clicks, the outrage over spider-woman's in a magazine marketed to 25 year olds is priceless.

Frankly this thread boils down to a few male feminists who can't get laid worrying about what some other adult is purchasing for his or her 3.99. Get a spooning life! :ohnoez:

I'm glad someone finally mentioned MTV.

Anyone getting 'upset' over that 'overtly-sexual pose' will also no doubt be banning their child from 90% of videos shown to promote the latest songs.

MTV is a visual assault of gyrating obese cellulitic booty close-ups. The reason for said booty wiggling is beyond me, but it offends me far more than some terrible piece of supposed art from a washed up guy in a hardly read comic.

Which isn't much, as to be quite honest, if any of the outraged parties on this thread actually bothered to hit the club districts of their nearest big city, I can assure you Ms Drew is decidedly OVERDRESSED.

There are more people, as usual, being offended on behalf of people who aren't offended in the first place.

I typed in "teenage girls clubbing" into bing - this was the first picture:

For legalities sake - this is at an over 18 club. I'll put it in spoilers in case you are at work - it's just sad though, not rude.

Does anyone think that this is a bigger problem, or a drawing of a pretend woman?

It was on in the background as I was typing, in all honesty I did not notice. It was when things went quiet or I knew there was some theme music that drew my attention like when they played that recorded Coldplay song and I glanced over to see a Robin Williams montage.

MTV usually does not feature any of the music I like but it was background noise. Maybe I am getting apathetic in my older age, but I thought as you get older you are supposed to feel outrage in the "get off my lawn sense". I find as I get older, the less certain things matter in the grand scheme of things.

If this is to me Andrew, I quite clearly stated JD or MTV booty shots don't bother me.

18 year old girls running around in their underwear at nightclubs doesn't offend me either. I just feel sad, as we both know how that story sometimes ends.

In a strangers house, with a hangover, calling for a cab to get home full of shame and remorse.

I'm glad I have 2 sons, not daugthers tbh. Much less worry.

It was to you in terms of conversation, but in reference to the overall thread and not 'you' personally. I do not have any children but I would not want daughters. I agree with you and could see how that would be a headache. I see too much nonsense out there and really do recognize that headache.

I think Manara is taking the hit for a disappointment with superhero women portrayals that has been building for a while. Manara does erotic comics, nothing wrong with that, but when superhero comics have been leaning towards erotic comics in their portrayals more and more this was the straw that broke the camel's back. Some of the costumes that women wear no one could possibly fight in. Or walk, really.

As far as women fans a lot of the cosplay outfits are exactly the most 'sexist' but they love to wear them.

I see this as being a pretty basic question:

Do you believe that it is okay for female characters that are marketed to kids (featured in children cartoons, sold as toys, etc.) to also be marketed to adults (sexy poses on covers, sexy statues, etc.)?

I guess the argument can be made Spider-Woman isn't marketed at kids, although I'm sure I've seen her on more than one cartoon over the years and as an action figure. But, I sincerely doubt Marvel would ever release an adult oriented movie or TV show featuring the character, since they understand that the money for such a venture is made in the merchandising to kids.

It's a fine line Marvel has to walk now that their characters are becoming household names. Let's face it, those sexy covers sell books.

They dont sell near as many books as in the GA and SA when comics were marketed to kids

SA Scarlet Witch didn't stick her out and it sold great

Now who's projecting? I made no mention of my experience with women. As mentioned, that's just another way that man-children objectify women, and I'm not going to go down that road. Thanks for proving me right yet again.

(thumbs u

Nice try as well on reframing the issue with ad hominem attacks (the last resort of someone who knows they don't have a defensible position) into something that lets you continue objectifying women.

The actual issue here is that Marvel has a bad track record in portraying women. They pointed to this series specifically as to evidence that they're improving. And then they announce a cover that's one of the worst examples of objectification of women that we've seen from the in some time.

(As an aside to those that are mentioning Zenescope or porn businesses, expecting them to change is pretty much asking them to go out of business, and they're not going to do that because some people complain. Marvel has publicly stated their intention to change, so it's much more productive to call them out when they're not backing up their words with actions.)

I don't have high expectations that anyone's position will change based on a single thread, but it would be nice if this at least opened a few eyes. I think I'm done here.
