Is action comic 15 the 5th cover appearance of superman?

54 posts in this topic

The main thing with Action 15 is its the earliest affordable Superman cover. 1 7 10 13 and Superman 1 are out of control. And once the Superman Covers start continuous it's not as exciting. I think 17 is the better cover but 15 is a better close up. Those two are sort of like Detective 36 and 37. Not the keys and expense of 27 29 31 33 and 35 but way better than 39 on up.

I agree couldn't even afford the other ones :(

Since Superman #1 has an ad for Action Comics #14, you can assume that it was on the stands before Action #15.

Depending on which printing of Superman #1 you have the ad either states "On Sale June 2nd", or "On Sale Now"

This is interesting. I didn't know there were two versions. My two coverless have the "On sale June 2nd"

Is one version more rare than the other? I guess the "June 2nd" version is the 1st printing?

There are three printings, and while the "On sale now" version is clearly not the first, no one has figured out if the second resembles the first or the third. If memory serves the print runs were 500,000, 250,000 and 150,000 in order. If one were able to check all extant copies you could probably extrapolate which ad the 2nd print carried from the ratios, but in the slabbed era that's not going to happen, especially as few in possession of a slabbed copy are going to be interested in finding out they don't have a first print.

What is the difference in the 3rd version?

My two copies are both coverless and not slabbed so I'll dig them out and compare them.

That's the thing, at this point there are two known versions - either the ad for Action #14 says "On sale June 2nd" or it says "On sale now", but it's known there were three printings. It's reasonable to assume the "June 2nd" ads were in the first printing, and the "On sale now" ads were in a later printing, but no one seems to know if the change in the ad language was made for the 2nd print or the 3rd.

If one were to survey 100 copies of Superman #1, anything close to a 5:4 ratio of the two ad versions would strongly indicate only the 1st had a June 2nd ad, if the ratio were closer to 5:1 it would indicate the 2nd did as well, but even with that sample one could come up inconclusive numbers.

looks even better at that grade :cloud9:

Thanks. This was an upgrade from my previous 5.5. This copy is rich in colors with nice PQ just stands out for me. Also, the providence of it being part of the Billy Wright collection was cool too.

For a long time, Action Comics #13 & #15 were priced the same in Overstreet. Then, for a few years, Action Comics #15 was actually valued HIGHER than #13. Why? Because collectors liked how large Superman was depicted on the cover of #15 compared to the #13. I think both covers are incredible!

Yes, its the 7th Superman cover, but I think uchiha101 is referring to the 5th Superman cover in Action comics.

yes that's the one I'm referring too

hm

Technically, doesn't Superman's image and his rocket blasting off of Krypton makes #12 the 5th Superman cover in Action Comics?
