What *Was* in that Warehouse

13 posts in this topic

One of the things I found the other day while digging through my good-girl art books was an Overstreet Update #10 from 1989.

Since we seem to talk a lot about what was in that Koch-Dolgoff-Koch warehouse of early Marvels, I thought I would post how fr back their runs still were at that time.

Please remember though, this is AT LEAST 6 months after a lot of the good stuff has already been sold through, as Suspense #63 is already $28 in the guide, and K-D-K was down to their F/VF issues at $17.50 each instead of the VF/NM ones that had been $3 earlier in the year. But this should give a good idea of how plentiful some of these books were. I'll try to find one of their earlier sales lists and post that when I find it.

it was slightly higher if you just wanted 1 of each

There was no Spider-man in this listing, but I remember them going back as far as #23 for sure, and remember Daredevils in the single digits being there.

I'll look for some earlier ads and see if I can't fill in the missing spots, but I thought everyone might enjoy seeing this.

In the early-mid 80's I bought a number of these. The paper quality was awful - tan to cream on many. Looked like they were stored in a hothouse. Covers were really clean and flat with almost no spine wear - BUT the books I got- the cover colors were also dull and did not POP at all - mainly due to the whites being reduced to that tan/cream.

I agree. I love seeing this kind of data, as it often explains a lot, like why certain books tend to be much more available than others in the same timeframe. An example is X men #10. Despite its age, I've seen tons of high grade copies, yet 11 is so much tougher. There are tons of similar examples, and this kind of info goes a long way in explaining the inconsistencies.

Yep, I discovered the same thing back in the early to mid 80s. Bought runs of Avengers from #30-50, Tales of Suspense from #70-99 & Tales to Astonish from #70-99. All had the cream pages, & cover colors as you described. I was extremely happy because I think I paid around $2 to $3 each at the time for the F/VF grade (maybe the VG/F). I also ordered a complete set of grades on the Fantastic 4 #52, so I could see how their grading was. It turned out that they did not have the top 2 or 3 grades & I ended up only getting the G/VG, VG/F & F/VF & a refund on the higher grades.

Most 65' and earlier books are tougher in HG. In 1966 it's a toss-up. Some are tough, and others are quite easy. An example is FF48 is easy to find, but 49 and 50 are nearly impossible. Study the census, and the market as a whole, and you'll be able to determine if a book is tough or not.
