Star Wars returns to Marvel Comics

I've always thought there were two sets of customers, one set buys the single issues, one set waits and buys the trade paperbacks. I buy the trades. I noticed the report said the trades are doing well.

It would be interesting to compare if there is a drop in single issue sales but a rise in trade sales for each star wars title. Sometimes I think they should only release certain stories on the trade market.

There are customers like me who buy both. :)

It is an interesting question. Trades actually track very close to the pamphlets for most comic books. If a comic sells well, the trade sells well. It is a rare book that sells well as a trade, but not as a pamphlet.

Star Wars trade paperbacks are doing well, but even they have fallen off compared to last year.

To complete for reader dollars today, a title needs buzz. All the publishers know this. It is an unfortunate reality of the comic market today and a big reason why I believe a large percentage of books sell to speculators, not readers. Marvel looks to be generating the necessary hype for Star Wars #26 and the new "classified" title.

Let's face it, there is only so much money for comics and a large number of titles to choose from. The squeeky (hyped) wheel (comic) will get the grease (money.) It isn't sufficient to tell good stories with decent art anymore, unfortunately. We have been conditioned to chase the hype.

Now that these Marvel Star Wars comics are set as canon, I like the potential for some of these back issues to become important. Star Wars 4 - 6 from the 2015 ongoing series feature a few really cool moments that will possibly have lasting impact.

Star Wars #6 tells us that it was Boba Fett who discovered and told Darth Vader that the name of the kid who blew up the Death Star was Skywalker. Star Wars #4 is the first appearance of Sana Starros who also goes by Sana Solo and it looks like they are already casting her for the female lead in the upcoming Han Solo anthology movie.

I had this really great Sith jam sketch done in just pencils a while ago by the awesome artist Steve Kurth! :cloud9: It is signed by Ray Park (Darth Maul) and Ian McDiarmid (Emperor).

This Sana Solo news is just a rumor at this point. Nothing definitive except a few sites speculating. I hope its true, but my gut says it probably won't be.

Of course, this speculation is interesting, so I went ahead and published a blog posting about it:

Coming Feb 2017.....

Darth Maul's Past Will Be Explored in His Own Marvel Comic

...Written by Cullen Bunn and with art by Luke Ross, Darth Maul, revealed by USA Today this morning, will follow the young sith acolyte skulking in the shadows of the galactic underworld. Denied the chance to strike at the Jedi Order by his master, Maul goes off on a trek to ease his rage—only to find the opportunity to test himself against a Jedi that he could potentially corrupt to the dark side. The series, a five-part story, will apparently attempt to reconcile both the silent brute of a character seen in The Phantom Menace and the cunning trickster Maul evolved into in his appearances during Clone Wars and Rebels....
