CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR Darker Than Other Marvel Movies

 

"Tonally, this is unlike any Marvel movie we've seen before," Joe Russo told the magazine. "It's certainly got more edge and, on an emotional level, darker things happen in this movie than people have experienced in other Marvel films."

 

"In our own minds we always thought of The Winter Soldier as a political thriller, and we think of Civil War as a psychological thriller. So they're related in tone and texture, but there is a different central dynamic at work," Anthony Russo added.

 

Ultimately, it won't all be darkness and pain, as the Russos prefer to have a movie where you "get to laugh and cry and be scared and be happy. That's better than just crying," Joe Russo said. "So while there is an intensity to this and a psychological realism, in places it's also a much funnier movie than Winter Soldier. Hopefully we balance the movie properly so when you watch, it moves seamlessly between those tones."

 

It sounds like they are adding range to the story versus just something funny or something serious.

As long as its as good as Winter Soldier they can't go wrong but with this many characters it has the danger of becoming Avengers 2.5 rather than Cap 3.

Winter Soldier is #1/#2 for me as a favorite MCU movie (it's a trade-off with Guardians). So I am assuming the Russo Brothers will maintain that same great storytelling approach. But you are right - this could get way out of hand.

For those of you who are seeking to either brush up on your Captain American cinema or just relive the glory days, most theaters will be screening a CAPTAIN AMERICA marathon, leading right up to CIVIL WAR. The films taking part are CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER, THE AVENGERS, CAPTAIN AMERICA: WINTER SOLDIER, AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON and finally, CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR.
