Issues with inserts

4 posts in this topic

How does CGC grade a comic that came with an insert? I have a Capt. Britain #1 (UK) that came with a cardboard cutout mask, which wasn't attached to the comic. It was taken out long ago though, an otherwise the issue is at least a 9.4. Does the loss of the mask affect the value or is it a "nice to have"?

Thanks.

a mask like that sounds integral to that particular books value.

not sure if they count things like tattoos or masks or other items as being part of the book though-- unlike say a Marvel Value stamp or cut off coupon that was part of the book itself and not an add-on. Might depend on whether it was part of the binding itself

Leaving grading aside, Free gifts are quite a common feature with #1 issues of UK comics, indeed its common for #2 and #3 issues to have gifts too.

Comics which still have the gifts are valued much, much higher than corresponding copies with the gifts missing.

Indeed it's a very lucrative sideline to search out the gifts themselves and sell separately - particularly as recognizing an item as a comic free gift is quite a skill in itself as there have been thousands issued over the years from many hundreds of publications.

The gifts typically can range from being:

badges

model planes

practical jokes

mini comics

sweets

stickers

posters

masks

guns

pretty much anything that you can think of that may appeal to a child.

I actually have a very extensive collection of UK comic free gifts from the early 20s right up to the present day.

Even the wrappers from confectionary free gift items long since eaten add considerable value to the issuing comic.
