Not what you were expecting I know, but still...I love this book.

I saw that Herb Trimpe was going to be at the Amazing AZ Con in February this year and I really wanted to find something cool for him to sign. I could have him sign my reader copy of Hulk 172 but I already have a 9.6 copy that I dont want to crack and the reader would only get like a 9.2 with a press, so nah. I decided to check the comic book database to see what else Herb had a hand in creating and thats when I came across Nick Fury Agent of SHIELD 15. I know, I know, he is not in any way related to the Bullseye we all know and love from Daredevil 131...which I would also like to pick up someday...but this is like the proof of concept character that inspired that Bullseye so to me thats pretty cool.

Rather than having a supernatural ability that allows him to always hit his target, this Bullseye relies on weapons he creates himself that strike with amazing accuracy no matter who is pulling the trigger. He uses just such a weapon, a rifle that tunes in to the specific heartbeat of its victim, to assassinate Nick Fury in this issue. Wait? Nick Fury was killed? Well thats sure the way it looks until you follow the story in the next chapter in Avengers 72! I love it when storylines transition from one title to another like that.

Also featured in this issue is an appearance by a rock group called Country Joe and the Catfish...never heard of em, but turns out they used to sing anti-war songs during the Vietnam era. In this issue theyre singing about the Fantastic Four and Dr. Strange, lol.

Sadly, poor Bullseye meets his maker at the hands of Dum Dum at the end of this issue which is unfortunate cause he really could have had a great run if another writer took the time to develop the character. Oh well...Bullseye, you will not be forgotten and your legacy lives on in the new Bullseye.

P.S. Ive never cracked a slab myself so I may need to look up that YouTube video we made with Ronnylama at ECCC last year. :)

Til next time...

It looks like an oil painting.

I have my OCC copy of DD 131 that I may submit someday. It will probably get 9.2 or something like that, but this is a very cool book you have here, surfer! I love that it has white pages! Trimpe's sig will look great on it!

I'd say either have him sign it at an angle parallel with the top of the gun, between Bullseye's head and the gun, or have him sign between Bullseye's legs, just above Nick Fury's prone form.

As far as cracking the book goes, I wish I could be there to do it for you and show you. I've cracked so many slabs now, I've become an expert. lol

Good luck with that book. Are you going to have it pressed before regrading just to see if it can increase in grade any?

You had me fooled... but it is a cool looking Bullseye and may be the prototype for DD's Bullseye.

BTW: It's Country Joe and the Fish... no Catfish, and they are a pretty good band.

Good luck with cracking it open and I hope it somehow comes back at a higher grade with Trimpe's signature.

Thanks guys. I like the idea of the signature between his fist and gun...think I will do that. I am on the fence about pressing...it's expensive but I might do it just to try and retain the grade. Finally, fish, catfish...I was close, lol. I will share the results whenever I get the book back with the sig.

As far as the pressing is concerned, if you are thinking about doing it and worried about the cost. Save up for it. It will be worth it. It also makes a difference. However, you need to make sure that a press could improve the comic book. You might want to invest in the graders notes to see what dropped it to a 9.2. I also love how it is notated that it is the last .15 cent issue.

Yes, I agree with TNerb, definitely take a close look at it to see if you feel pressing would have a chance to improve it any.

The only problem with getting the graders notes is that it costs $5 and may not give you the info you would need to make a decision. If that happens though, you can always try to get a refund for inadequate notes, but that doesn't always happen either. Maybe someday they will stop charging for graders notes. :(

I submitted a book that I did not press before and it received 9.2 and after looking at the notes, I determined that it was pointless to get it pressed and try for a higher grade. I'm happy with the book anyway, so ultimately it didn't matter.

Good luck with it. Definitely let us know how it all turns out. :)

Brilliant choice of a book Surfer and GREAT SA cover. I love it.

Herb's sig will look beautiful on it.

See you soon

Lee

Thanks Lee. I'm looking forward to seeing that scrawl added and if it retains the grade or at least doesn't drop below a 9.0 I'll be happy. Hope to see you at the festival or if not I know we'll catch up at ECCC in March!
