Price written in pencil

16 posts in this topic

hey there,

I was wondering if someone could tell me if prices written in pencil is allowed in VF, VF+ and VF/NM.

Examples: a):neatly written and small on top left hand corner of back cover.

b): same as above but within the book, such as top corner.

Writing medium: Pencil

I noticed when I searched the internet not one grading guide listed them in anything greater than FINE. However, when I got out my copy of The Overstreet Comic Book Grading Guide 2nd edition, there are examples on page 191, date written in ink, page193, #1 written in ink. Both examples are about a 1/4 the way down the cover, both under title of book. Both books I believe were vf/nm.

Thanks

They will often receive high grades...... many many comics were sold this way up into the 70's..... I actually like them. I don't have loads of examples... but a fiend slabbed his ASM 15 with "25.00" on the same spot you mention and it received an 8.5..... which is what it would have been without the written price. I would expect it to be allowed at least into the NM range. GOD BLESS...

Little to no effect on the VF to VF/NM range.

In addition, I believe, provenance adds value in that it can -- in a range of ways --- make a book an artifact rather than just a commodity.

I've seen penciled prices that the pencil wasn't pressed hard enough to leave impression and dry cleaned right off with no trace left.
