Sony Confirms LEGO MOVIE Directors Will Mastermind An Animated SPIDER-MAN Film

Just a few short moments ago, at Sony's CinemaCon presentation, chairman Tom Rothman announced that Phil Lord and Christopher Miller (The Lego Movie; 21 Jump Street) will direct, write, and produce an animated Spider-Man film! Rothman went on to reveal that the upcoming film will be set in an independent universe, and will run concurrently with their highly anticipated live-action Marvel Studios collaboration: "the film will explore the graphic roots of the character and co-exist with our live-action entries." He also more or less confirmed, what almost everyone already assumed, that the new teenage Spidey will in fact make his debut in 2016's Captain America: Civil War.

The animated Spider-Man feature is expected to hit theaters July 20, 2018 and Rothman concluded his piece on Spidey by describing the project as "f***ing awesome."

Phil Lord then briefly touched on the animated Spider-Man

We’re sort of juggling superheroes with the color red in them, that’s all we do. [laughter] We’re trying not to confuse their powers or anything, but it does get tricky. But it’s the same thing, is there a way to do one of these movies in a new way? That’s the exciting thing about it being animated, is it opens up a lot of different possibilities.

Chris and I like to carve out spaces where people will let us do what we want. So much of our careers are like “oh, no one will bother us while we try to make a 21 Jump Street movie, because it’s such a crazy idea, no one’s going to know what to do with it.” So we’re doing these things kind of like that. They’re part of these huge franchises, but kind of are off a little bit to the side, and that gives us a lot of creative freedom, and that’s the thing we love. Hopefully we won’t waste that!

Sony’s Animated Spider-Man Movie Shifts Release Date To December 2018

with release date change: The release date for Sony’s animated Spider-Man movie being directed by The Lego Movie‘s Phil Lord and Christopher Miller has been shifted from July 20, 2018 to December 21, 2018. The push comes after the studio earlier this year unveiled its Spider-Man reboot plan with Kevin Feige and Amy Pascal steering the ship of its $4 billion live-action franchise.

Forgot to adjust the date here.

Animated Spider-Man Logo Revealed

spidermananimatedlogowatermark-178679.jpg

Tonight at CinemaCon, Sony released the official logo for Animated Spider-Man, the forthcoming animated movie from The LEGO Movie directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller.

When Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures teamed up to allow Spider-Man to appear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, part of that deal was an animated Spider-Man movie delivered by Sony Pictures. Lord and Miller will produce and write the animated Spider-Man movie but will most likely pass on directing as their next project is the (still untitled) Han Solo movie.

The animated Spider-Man will co-exist with Tom Holland's portrayal of Peter Parker in those films.

Speaking of which...

Sony Claims Their Upcoming Animated Spider-Man Movie Is Groundbreaking

Sony dropped two Spider-Man bombs at CinemaCon yesterday. Among them, they thrilled fans by announcing the title for Sony and Marvel’s Peter Parker reboot: Spider-Man: Homecoming. Their second piece of good news was that the new animated film featuring the web-slinger is apparently going to be groundbreaking.

“It’s a vision of Spider-Man that will take your breath away. Conceptually and visually, it will break new ground for the superhero genre,” says Sony."

In any case, our friendly neighborhood wall-crawler will definitely start from an excellent base. Slated for release in 2018, the feature will be written and produced by Phil Lord and Chris Miller, the masterminds behind 21 and 22 Jump Street as well as Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs and the ever-enjoyable The LEGO Movie. At this point, however, it’s unknown whether the pair is up for directing it – since they’ve already passed on the upcoming Men in Black/Jump Street crossover MIB 23.

The animated Spider-Man feature bears no connection to the live-action Spider-Man reboot or the MCU in general, and is currently scheduled for release on December 21st, 2018.

RUMOR: Miles Morales Will Be The Focus Of Sony's Animated SPIDER-MAN Movie In 2018

We've known for a while now that Phil Lord and Chris Miller's animated Spider-Man movie won't be set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, so if this new rumour is to be believed, we probably won't be seeing Miles Morales in live-action for quite some time. Heroic Hollywood reports that the character will be the focus of this movie, a decision sure to potentially please as many fans as it ultimately upsets.

After all, Miles taking centre stage in this animated feature surely reduces the chance of him being introduced in the new Spider-Man franchise, but that's purely speculation on our part, and by no means set in stone (Kevin Feige however has made it clear that Marvel intends to keep the focus on Peter Parker for the time being). Regardless, there's no denying this is good news for fans of Miles!

HEROIC HOLLYWOOD: Miles Morales To Be Focus Of 2018 Animated Spider-Man Film!

EXCLUSIVE: HUGE news before the holiday break. According to my sources, Miles Morales the teenage half-black/half-Puerto Rican Spider-Man will be the focus of Phil Lord and Chris Miller’s 2018 animated Spider-Man film due from Sony on December 21, 2018.

The biggest clue (which I overlooked) was revealed last year at Cinemacon when Tom Rothman, chairman of the Sony Pictures Entertainment Motion Picture Group, took the stage and made the announcement.

"The film will exist independently of the projects in the live-action Spider-Man universe, all of which are continuing."

Sony's Animated SPIDER-MAN Movie Finally Has A Director; Will It Revolve Around Miles Morales?

Set for release in December 21st, 2018, the animated movie now has a director in the form of Bob Persichetti. He's never directed a feature, but has worked on almost countless releases, serving as head of story for Puss in Boots and The Little Prince. In a random bit of trivia, he also voiced the "Ohhh Cat" in the former.

Interestingly, The Hollywood Reporter reveals that The LEGO Movie's Phil Lord penned this Spider-Man movie alone, but he will produce alongside partner Chris Miller. Also serving in that capacity is Amy Pascal and Avi Arad. Despite rumours that Miles Morales will be the focus of this animated spinoff, Sony reportedly refused to comment on that, so it looks like that's going to have to remain little more than speculation for the time being.

A first-time director on a Spider-Man animated movie after Sony is trying to help get the entire franchise back on track. Is that a wise move?

Spider-Man Animated Film Won't Feel Like Other Spider-Man Movies According To Writers

Phil Lord and Chris Miller (Son of Zorn, Han Solo) are hard at work on a new animated film, which is rumored to feature former Ultimate Spider-Man Miles Morales. If it does, it would certainly fit what the directors are aiming for with their new project. Lord and Miller shared some quick thoughts with IGN.

"It is not going to feel like every other Spider-Man movie you've seen," Miller promised. "It will stand on its own as a unique filmgoing experience." Lord added, "It's wonderful and the people that are working on it are geniuses. It is unique. ... People will love it."

In a separate interview, Miller reiterated that the film will be different than others that have come before it.

"It is not just another Peter Parker origin story that you’ve seen 400 times," said Miller. "It is something totally unique and different and not like anything you’ve seen. That’s all I can say… and you’re going to love it!"

Will Sony's Animated Spider-Man Movie Feature Miles Morales?

Now, fans are being sent into a tizzy over one piece of the casting call. It looks like Sony’s animated feature may feature everyone’s favorite Spider-Man, Miles Morales.

Though the casting call has already expired, the folks over at Comic Book Movie saved the character descriptions on the call sheet. The release gave a short synopsis of the film which says it “chronicles the adventures of two unlikely friends, Terrence and Pete.” However, it appears those names are false, and Terrence may just be Miles Morales.

Check out the character description for Terrence and see what you think:

“A young African-American/Puerto Rican teen from Brooklyn; he is new to this suburban school and now feeling out of place, overwhelmed, pressured with new responsibilities, and dealing with puberty; while trying to fit in he must do his best to stay out of trouble; along the way in developing his identity he's losing old friends but now making a new one, Pete.”

As for Pete, don’t go thinking the character has any relationship to Peter Parker. According to the cast sheet, here’s the description for Pete: “A young, slightly geeky, Asian-American teen; he's smart, sweet, and encouraging; although very unlike any of the friends Terrence had in his old Brooklyn neighborhood, Pete proves to be a good fit for Terrence making good decisions."

Sony's SPIDER-MAN ANIMATED MOVIE Will Feature Miles Morales

Sony Pictures has confirmed that its Untitled Spider-Man Animated Movie project, written by LEGO movie team Phil Lord and Chris Miller, will indeed feature Miles Morales as Spider-Man. There was some question about whether Morales would be the featured.

Bob Persichetti (Shrek 2, Puss In Boots) and Peter Ramsey (Rise of the Guardians) have some pretty acclaimed animated features on their respective resumes, which bodes well for this Miles Morales Spider-Man movie. The release date of Christmas season 2018 is a prime one, giving this movie a real chance at big box office success.

SPIDER-MAN Animated Movie Finds Its Miles Morales In Shameik Moore; Liev Schrieber Will Voice The Villain

150353.jpg

Quote

THR reports that Sony Pictures has settled on an actor to voice the web-swinging hero of their upcoming animated Spider-Man movie.

Shameik Moore, who made his name starring in indie flick Dope and Netflix's The Get Down, will play Miles Morales in the film, while Liev Schrieber (X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Ray Donovan) will provide the voice of the villain - though his character's identity is being kept under wraps for the time being.

Bob Persichetti is set to helm the picture, with Peter Ramsey (Rise of the Guardians) on board to co-direct. It's been confirmed that this will be a standalone project, and won't be set in the same continuity as the main MCU films.

Written by Phil Lord and executive produced by Lord and Chris Miller, the animated Spider-Man movie is due to open December 21, 2018.

Liev Schreiber Shares Some Details On Sony's MILES MORALES: SPIDER-MAN Animated Movie

Quote

When Collider caught up with the Ray Donovan star recently, they were quick to ask him about his work on the project.

Confirming that he doesn't start recording his lines for another month or two, the actor couldn't give much away about the story, but did say that, "I think real hardcore Spidey fans will be able to follow this with great ease. It will feel very familiar, in a good way, in a kind of throwback way."

That's interesting phrasing, especially as Miles Morales is such a modern character. We have no idea what animation style the movie will use or if it could end up having an unexpected period setting!

"It was my children, really," Schreiber added when asked why he signed up to star in the untitled Spider-Man movie. "People know me from things like Chuck and Ray Donovan, and I now have an 8-year-old and a 9-year-old, and I would very much like to do things that they can see so they know what their father does."
