Harvey Dude, didn't Sparkle City Comics put out that rare book portfolio? I remember them hawking it at a

Creation Convention in Philly in the late seventies. It's also interesting to see Phil Levine mentioned so

prominently. I suspect he's on eBay, but otherwise, he seems to have dropped off the face of the earth.

No more Price Guide ads from him.

You are correct on all accounts. I bet many of the reprint rare book portfolios may have been broken up

so this portfolio is neat to own in its own right.

I believe Phil goes under the name of paperpeddler on eBay.

Any idea as to the grades on that cache of 1958 copies of If the Devil Would Talk? 893scratchchin-thumb.gif

That post-auction Heritage copy of the Stalin book is awesome (a slabbed 9.8!), but with an asking

price at over 4k I can't even think about it.

Based on the 1958 submissions,

I would think the cache was not circulated. They probably fall in the 8.5-9.4

range as the pre-pressing grade.

I passed on the Stalin book when the reserve increased the cost past the double guide mark.

I use Overstreet estimates as a guide. With that said, I do find it interesting how some items that

were listed, as rare or scarce several decades ago, still remain elusive. Below is a 1979 write-up

from the Rare Book Portfolio of reprinted material noting the estimates for the following books:

Blood is the Harvest (1950) - under ten known copies

If the Devil Would Talk (1950) - under ten known copies

If the Devil Would Talk (1958) - four known copies

The Red Iceberg (1960) - five known copies

How Stalin Hopes We Will Destroy America (1951) - ?

Twenty-six years later, we have the following numbers certified:

Blood is the Harvest (1950) - 13

If the Devil Would Talk (1950) - 6

If the Devil Would Talk (1958) - 10

The Red Iceberg (1960) - 6 (five different variants)

How Stalin Hopes We Will Destroy America (1951) – 4

Obviously other copies are out there. As I previously posted, I heard eighty or so copies of the 1958

revised “If the Devil Would Talk” did surface from 1979 to the early eighties. I also heard that there

are a handful of “How Stalin Hopes We Will Destroy America” that may be held by one collector.

I still believe that the five variants of the Red Iceberg are correctly listed as rare, if broken down by variant.

I also believe “Blood is the Harvest” falls under twenty copies in existence.

Time will tell whether the aforementioned books are truly rare to scarce.

Although there are 14 known copies of Blood is the Harvest (a 14th copy surfaced for sale last year), there is supposedly only one untrimmed copy of BitH in existence.

I try to keep abreast of this genre and especially the "Blood is the Harvest" books. There are two versions

of "Blood is the Harvest" with one version having the word "fire" on the cover. I know that paperpeddler

bought the "fire" version off of eBay back in Sept. 2003. Since I already had a "Blood is the Harvest"

comic, I let this copy slip through my fingers before I figured out the difference. frustrated.gif

There are 3 copies graded higher than this one, but all only at 5.5.

I don't have my old price guides with me but if my memory still serves me, an old guide estimated

35 copies in existance. To date, CGC has certified 9 unrestored and 9 restored.

I don't know if any of those numbers were resubmissions. Here is my copy. It is

extensively restored but I love it nonetheless. cloud9.gif

Man, you GOTTA love an All-American 16 thread. I'll keep it going with my restored copy (7.0, moderate resto). I wonder how many more copies we can get posted?

I believe forumites goldencomics and Ian levine may have copies of this book as well. It would be interesting to see their copies.

Time to get these Gerber threads back alive. I just received this Gerber "8" today. Published by Holyoke Publ. Co. in 1944. Nice anti-Hitler, Hirohito cover. Interesting story inside about the US/Chinese "torturing" Japanese POWs.

I was going through this thread and I notice something I previously wrote was in error. It was

brought to my attention, by this forum, that there is only one version of "Blood is the Harvest"

since the word "fire" was penciled on the cover for the book sold in 2003. I just wanted to clear up

this misunderstanding. sorry.gif

[Without knowing what the back of the book looks like, could that miswrap be "pressed" so the white border is more even down the spine? Love that cover.

As usual, I bought it slabbed so I don't know the history. I checked with the person I purchased it from and was told that it was bought from an original and he doubted it had been pressed. The book was miscut and has a shadow both of which clearly brought the grade down to the 9.0. Was it pressed? You be the judge. I don't know. I sure would like to though.

hey Mark, i read the original question as "could it be pressed (in the future) to get rid of the white space" rather than "could it (have already been) pressed..."

just to ease your mind a bit on that particular theme
