Apes lands an 'A-' CinemaScore from audiences, and seems to be on track to hit the estimate for opening weekend ($56MM +).

DEADLINE: ‘War For The Planet Of The Apes’ Hangs Onto $57M+ Opening In The Midst Of Sluggish Summer

Quote

20th Century Fox’s War for the Planet of the Apes is coming in around where the industry saw it yesterday with $56.7M-$57M, which is the second best for the franchise after its previous chapter Dawn of the Planet of the Apes ($72.6M) and above the first installment Rise of the Planet of the Apes ($54.8M). This is according to early AM estimates with many distributors reporting soon.

Some promising signs for War‘s legs is that moviegoers loved it just as much as Dawn and Rise with an A- CinemaScore with both titles respectively legging out to $208.5M and $176.8M domestic. Dawn turned a $182M+ profit off a $710.6M global ticket sales, 15% of that coming from China. After grossing $22M on Friday including $5M previews, War was down 12% with $19.5M on Saturday.

BOX OFFICE: WAR FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES Opens Strong in China

Quote

After underperforming in both North America and most of the world, it looks like the latest Planet of the Apes film has finally found the success it deserves. The Matt Reeves-directed film generated $20 million on its opening day in the Middle Kingdom. This, of course, includes Thursday preview numbers as well. The third installment of the trilogy is currenty on pace for a massive $60 million opening weekend. This would, according to box office insiders, set the film for an overall total of between $120 million and $130 million in China alone! That would mean the blockbuster could very well end up above the $500 million mark at the worldwide box office.

This opening is well above the opening of the previous intallment, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes ($47 million opening and $107 milllion overall). Just like that film, War for the Planet of the Apes is also receiving outstanding word of mouth and praise from both Chinese critics and audiences.

Deadline is thinking Planet of the Apes is what distracted from other movies at the Chinese box office this weekend.

DEADLINE: ‘War For The Planet Of The Apes’ Swings To Fox Record In China; Tops $430M WW

Quote

Two months after beginning global rollout, Fox’s War For The Planet Of The Apes planted its foot in China. The debut of $62.3M on 30,000 screens scored the studio its biggest opening weekend ever in the Middle Kingdom. The result also pushed the Matt Reeves-directed threequel from Chernin Entertainment across the $400M global mark where the total to date sits at $432M. The international box office cume is now $287.9M.

WFTPOTA, it was up 42% on Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes and is 20% higher than Logan, another well-reviewed recent Fox title. Dawn finaled north of $107M in the PROC in 2014 while Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes rose to $31M in pre-boom 2011.

WFTPOTA was dominant at 65% of local turnstiles, crimping the swing of last week’s champ, Spider-Man: Homecoming — the latter was on far fewer screens. The webslinger, however, crossed the $100M threshold in China.

65% of the market?!

Finally got to see this movie.

FANTASTIC!!

So many super characters all-around, and a story that kept this engaging all the way through. I can see why WB grabbed Matt Reeves while they could. And so much of the movie done via sign language.
