Fakes and CAF

13 posts in this topic

CAF's eBay auctions feature seems to do a great job of weeding the xeroxes and no-name porn and stuff out of Ebay's OA listings, but there is still this:

...which got me to thinking about the increasing number of fakes on Ebay and what a blight on the hobby its getting to be. Would CAF be a logical location for a fakes archive/ discussion clearinghouse that potential dupes could easily access, hopefully before they buy?

that. piece is so fake. iam shocked it gotten any bids at all it,s that bad. I think with drawing.s and sketches like this piece from an artist that have passed on. there should be group or company that you can send this drawing to be verified by expert collectors or dealers.

a two party or even three party that would verify the art like psa does signatures and memorabilia. or even something on caf where the piece can be posted so all collectors can express there thoughts on if the art is legit or trash.

I think when that happens we will see less fakes. and it will be even harder to pass off trash like this superman sketch as the real deal. let the buyer beware.

ebay. is a huge money machine. they will only do something if the problem cuts into there profits or cause bad press with the public. like when the space shuttle blew up. there were people putting pieces of the ship on ebay that were found in there area. the same day it was reported on tv. ebay shut every auction down.

andthe FBI posted on tv. anyone that finds any pieces must turn them in. if caught with any you will be jailed. that,s when ebay took action.

so unless original comic art becomes a national treasure some day. don't expect ebay to do much about fakes and copyright infringments stuff.

Ebay is a unique business beast. I've been buying and selling there for years (as many of us have) and it's clear that they're a business train wreck in every sense of the word. EXCEPT that they make money because they have the critical mass of buyers and sellers that no one else has been able to match yet.

Fakes aside, they make some of the poorest business decisions I've ever seen, yet the still continue to make money because there are no challengers that can really get the momentum that they received when the internet first began.

I'm hoping that the recent Pinterest announcement of adding buy it tags, or Etsy going public may someday pose a challenge to them (though both remain predominantly female-buyer platforms at the moment that may change).

Some crazy examples of ebay mis-mangement: they recently tested the hiding descriptions of items behind a link - so you could either see the picture OR the description but not both at the same time. I've had days where the "sold items" portion of my console was unavailable so I was unable to ship things that people had bought or days when their label printing was broken so I was unable to ship with their labels. They change both the site and their rules on the fly on a constant basis - leaving both sellers and buyers confused and angry.

With so many poor business decisions and so many constant technical errors on the site, they continue to make money hand over fist - so there's little incentive to actually run the business well. Until they're challenged or really lose money, they won't need to change. And assigning people-assets to root out and take care of fraudulent sellers will never even be a glimmer on the horizon until they're bleeding money. And at that point I doubt that's what they'll pay attention to. So the only real hope is external - maybe as someone suggested a solution is to partner with experts - like folks from here on a dedicated board? Or to hope that another platform comes along and somehow brings them down.

Funnily enough, you also just described the Donnelly Brothers and their operation, why it still exists, why it doesn't change, and what needs to be done to make them change (or get out of the business). Curious, no?

I have to ask...Who are Donnelly Brothers?

Reading the old threads is fun, but really it all boils down to this:

1. If you don't have a lot of money, it doesn't matter, you won't be buying from them.

2. If you do have a lot of money, you can buy from them, but doing so will guarantee you soon won't have any money at all. And not much art either.

True . . . and you will also lose any self-respect you have for yourself (if going the route of option 2).
