Jack Kirby was told to do the similarities of Planet of the Apes. He reused the name of Kamandi from his unused title of Kamandi of the Cavemen.

 

It was why this book should be not in the movie - too similar to Planet of the Apes. I quoted from somewhere on the Internet.
