Page numbers on Golden age books?

I posted this in the Gold section and didn't get much action...

 

I've been looking at some Golden age Batman pages and I have noticed some have what look like page numbers and some don't. Even for the same book, for example:

 

 

Anyone have any insight on this? Thanks!

Top page looks like it was taken out of a bound copy of multiple books; bindery holes/stitch marks on the left and there's never been a 785 page GA comic book.

Does that mean they went thru and "stamped" a page number on every single page of the bound copy?

 

785 seems like a lot of pages for a bound copy. What's up with that number?
