Is this a comic?

29 posts in this topic

I have an acquaintance that has this very "book" which is shown in this link:

http://www.dartmouth.edu/~library/digital/collections/books/ocn259708589/ocn259708589.html?mswitch-redir=classic

It is described as:

The Adventures of Mr. Obadiah Oldbuck. 1840

Done with Drawings

Timothy Crayon,

GYPSOGRAPHER

188

COMIC ETCHINGS

ON ANTIMONY.

If this is considered a "comic" then it is likely one of the earliest produced.

There was an epic thread about this book. Showcase4 was hoarding copies, and promoting their future value. Even comparing to action #1. After several hundred pages, it was either locked or removed. Also, I thought the year saw 1842 I think it's believed to be the first comic.

I opened this thread thinking I would see a picture of Ellen DeGeneris or Carlos Mencia. I don't think she is funny and he steals his jokes.

Greatly appreciate the link to this discussion. I will give it a read to see what the consensus is. To the point: I have been offered this to purchase.

Well, if you're purchasing for resale, I'm sure you'll be able to sell for almost half of what you paid. There's precedent for that.

I definitely did not start this thread to have it go for 202 pages ( jeepers! ) like the thread linked. Yes I was wondering about resale value and I honestly had no idea of the potential value. I had never heard of it, as the comic "expert" in my small circle I was asked to give a valuation for this and the owner asked me if it was a comic.

My answer: I do not know. I think I would call it a comic based on it's format: Drawn pictures with text.

Thanks for the input all.

lol contact Robert beerbohm about that he's been pushing this as the first ever comic book for about 10 years.

Yup, and what a crock that's so typical of him - using his influence to hype a book (that he had multiple copies of in his inventory) while inflating his already exaggerated hobby reputation.

Obadiah Oldbuck is a book with comics, it is not a comic book as we know it.

Personally I view OO as a very poor investment.
