The Mike Benson Horror Comic book is also a great source. Long out of print but a good one.

 

Benton did many excellent books on comics. For the pre-codies, his Horror Comics: The Illustrated History, Crime Comics: The Illustrated History and Science Fiction Comics: The Illustrated History are all very nicely done and certainly worth obtaining. I've had all three for many years now.
