GA covers featuring a dilemma...

32 posts in this topic

Almost any problem or choice or situation depicted on a comic cover can seem like a dilemma, however, if you read the below definition it is much narrower.

di·lem·ma (dĭ-lĕm′ə)

n.

1. A situation that requires a choice between options that are or seem equally unfavorable or unsatisfactory.

2. Usage Problem A problem that seems to defy a satisfactory solution.

3. Logic An argument that presents two alternatives, each of which has the same consequence.

Here are two obvious examples:

a couple went into the offices of thibodeaux & boudreaux looking for a quick divorce. thib was in the office, and after explaining their options, told the couple that the consultation fee was $150 by check, or $100 in cash. they opted for cash payment; the husband reached into his wallet and grabbed a really crisp c-note and handed it to thib.

once they were gone, thib realized that, as they often do, new bills stick together, and he in fact had TWO c-notes.

what is his ethical dilemma?

There is none after Thib cuts a check refunding $50 to the husband as the firm has been paid $150 and a check has changed hands. hm

Hmmm....the first "dilemma" is whether the lawyer gives the extra money back or keeps it him/herself.

A trickier issue, perhaps, is more of a practical one. How should the overpaid money be given back? If the couple came into the office married and came out divorced then presumably there is some agreement about how assets are split. Do the overpaid funds go back to the husband or are they split between husband and wife? The timing is tricky as the monetary transaction is between marital status.

I think Cat may be onto something too.

Good question Billy! What's your take?
