Post Your Top 3 Personal Comic Book/Original Art Acquisitions of 2015!

226 posts in this topic

Hey Gang, :hi:

My only positive contribution to the CGC boards is this my annual thread.

Show the comic board community your Top 3 Comic Book and/or Original Art purchases for your collection for the year ending 2015!

(Post only personal acquisitions, and not items you have sold or dealer profit books, etc...)

Provide a little background on each item in relation to why the comic book or art page was your top priority in 2015.

From my family to yours wishing everyone a Happy Holiday Season!

#1 Tales of Suspense #39 CGC 5.0 OWW

Courtesy of ComicLink. I got this book over the summer at auction. Douglas Gillock was nice enough to arrange to have the book brought to me to pick-up at their booth at SDCC. I was super excited to see this book in person. The eye appeal on this copy is unreal. Book presents much better than the stated grade. I couldn't be more happy finally owning a 1st appearance of Iron Man.

#2 Avengers #4 CGC 6.5 OWW

Toronto Riverdale Collection- ComicConnect auction from this past summer

When I picked up the book from Metro at SDCC this year I was amazed how white the cover was. As most of us know this book isn't rare, but somewhat challenging finding a copy with a white cover that isn't a shade of yellow w/CROW Pages. Very happy with this book!

#3 Amazing Spider-man #129 CGC 9.2 White Pages

Nicely Centered Copy

Courtesy of Bob Storms at HighGradeComics.com. Helping Bob every year yields a huge benefit of buying books I need for my collection. Hulk #1 is my next big book on my radar and there is no one more knowledgable/who gets them in more than Mr. Storms.

I don't have a scan of this book, and I can't get to it right now, plus if you have seen one you have seem them all. :P

2016 I hope to pick up a Hulk #1, FF #1, and/or ASM #3/GSX #1

I've been filling holes in my Kirby Thors-I have almost every book from 100 to 174. Nothing spectacular condition wise but they mean a lot to me. The 115 I had to order twice-the first one I bought had a missing wrap:

Art

1 - GI Joe Issue 155 Page 16 - Snake Eyes splash from the final issue of GI Joe. It summarized his life and why he did what he did in a letter to someone thinking of joining the military.

2 - Fox and the Hound Production Cels - two cel setup on a prelim production background (background was not used in the film)

3 - GI Joe 21 Cover Sketch Homage from Larry Hama - Commissioned at NYCC

Comics

1 - Showcase 22 - CGC 5.5 - I know I have it listed for sale but it is at a price that make it worth it to let it go.

2 - Amazing Spider-man 23 - CGC 9.0 - I wanted a nice upgrade for this book for awhile.

3 - Action Comics 25 - CGC 5.0 - An early Action that I missed out on over the boards a few years ago. The exact issue made its way back to me via Comic Connect back in March.

No great bronze pick ups this year which is disappointing but given how hot bronze has been some of these GA atomic era books seem like a bargain to me.

I can't rank the following three books, I enjoy them all immensely. The Eerie 1 might have a slight edge (it graded out 8.5), the Atomic War! is an 8.0 sorry for the scan quality.

That Eerie 1 is so damn awesome. I am completely jealous of that book. (worship)

I'll have to give it some thought about what to post here,in the meantime I just want to drool over the Eerie... :D

Two of the three were long sought grail-books too. :luhv:

There are art acquisitions as well, but think I'll save those for later.

2015 ain't over yet :makepoint:

Some of us are still counting on securing one or two last minute books.

A couple ....

Thank you Metro.

Upgrade from a 7.0. ComicLink purchase. Lost to a snipe bid on the first 8.5 copy auctioned off (also on ComicLink), there are only 2. Wasn't going to lose again. A single 9.0 ranks higher.

You have a separate question though... your books are always amazing and you are one of the nicest guys on the board.

However,

What were the top three beers you had this year?

I think I only bought three whole things this year to begin with so I don't have to worry about what the best ones are.

First is ASM 39. I had always wanted a copy, but had always been putting it off until now. Its a great feeling that I can finally check off the list.

RAD4899A2015526_114130.jpg

Second is a nice early action page from Y The Last Man

IVVqa74g_1308151632491.jpg

Last but not least was the highlight of my collecting year a page drawn by Jack Kirby for Kamandi a title that doesn't get enough love if you ask me. I was really happy to finally be able to add a piece by him to my collection.

Fairly quiet year for me, with a few pieces added to my "Iron" Throne commission theme.

Thrilled to get Frank Brunner, an artist synonymous with both Dr. Strange & Howard the Duck to add this piece:

One of the lone pieces of published art I picked up this year, the cover to Green Arrow #15, the lettering is all hand drawn, too.

These will not impress anyone else, but the heart wants what it wants.

Im sure if we all chip in, we could get you a better looking darkhawk 5. Should only take a few people donating 15 cents or a hundred of us donating a penny or if a store owner board member is feeling nice, he could dig one out the dollar box and we could help pay for shipping. showing that as a top 3 of the year makes me sad. You should have a nice copy.
