Tollickd
Ok I Ana a newbie and have seen many sketch cover comics and Cgc graded ones are they just in colored versions of a cover or are they actually a real sketch and a peice of art? ebtorres
Could be one or the other, really.
bababooey
Sketch covers with yellow labels identifying someone doing the "sketch" and when, are real sketches, there are sketch versions of covers that are simply the same drawing without colour. miraclemet
this is a sketch on a blank front comic. You can tell because 1) its a yellow label which is part of the "signature series" 2) it says on the label (below the book title) "Signed & Sketch by...." which means the person did the sketch. Sketchs might occur at a con, or they might be done in private. The better quality the sketch, the more likely it was done via special opportunity. The above one was probably a pre-order, or a special opp. here's one that George Perez did at a con (Im assuming) sometimes you also see "Sketch Variant" books. These are produced by the publisher and are the pencil or inked art for the cover (prior to adding color). Here's one: how you know it's not an original sketch 1. It's in a blue label 2. It says "sketch cover" on the left of the label where they designate variant types of comics. Sometimes you'll see signed sketch variants, those get yellow labels because they are authentic, witnessed signatures, but the book art itself is production art, not unique hand drawn art. You can tell because 1. it still says "sketch cover" on the left side 2, The description beneath the comic title says "Signed by..." not signed and sketch.... Cat-Man_America
A sketch cover I did earlier this year was a commission for a store that submitted it for grading and encapsulation. I'm assuming that the comic received a blue holder as the finished work was unwitnessed... Not sure if the owner is a boardie, but it would be nice to see which label it got and final grade. Bill1
Now, to make it even more confusing, there is pencil sketch, and inked sketch!

Michelangelo
I see A LOT of sketch cover 9.8's - and some of the sketches are very well done and thorough with all manipulating/moving around of the books for however long it takes an artist to draw, wouldn't that damage the book even slightly? at least to the point where a 9.8 was unlikely? lotemo
The blank cover variants used for sketches are generally printed on a heavier, sturdier paper stock so they usually hold up well while the artist is doing their work. It seems to keep them in a condition worthy of 9.8 after the work is complete.
xNerdyThingsx
There is a third situation with regards to actual original art sketch covers that were sold in polybags by the publisher. I’m unsure how CGC treats these scenarios but it would be great to know.

Still considered unwitnessed unless sent by publisher to cgc, if it comes to you or anyone else first then the chain of custody has been broken to warrant a yellow label ExNihilo
