Happy Birthday Stan Lee!

30 posts in this topic

Happy Birthday to the great creator Stan Lee.

Co-created more famous characters than anybody in pop culture.

No one comes in a close second!

+1

He has created more famous characters than anyone in pop culture, and certainly more than any other comic book writer.

According to Wikipedia, the top 3 are:

Stan Lee 336

Jack Kirby 316

Roy Thomas 152

No one else broke 100 on their listing.

You can see why Marvel was able to call themselves the house of ideas, as those three spent most of the career (and Stan all of his career) at Marvel!

Is that just comics, or would that potentially include other pop culture figures like Walt Disney? He would have been my 1st choice.

Just comics.

Walt Disney as a company would probably be bigger than almost anyone, but as far as what Walt himself created, it's hard to know completely for sure, so it's usually just listed as a company creation.

If we are including everything, and I mean everything. Walt Disney developed or created far more characters. Just in one movie there were one hundred and one dalmatians. Seriously, not being silly here. If Marvel is going to count every single one of Peter Parker's girlfriends or girl-friends as characters created by Stan Lee (Betty Brant, Liz Allen) then every tertiary Disney character has Walt's hand in it from cartoon short until the Jungle Book (which was the last movie he was directly involved in.) There are even characters that he had a hand in the creative process that were shelved until after after his death when the ideas and films were fully developed such as the Disney version of the Little Mermaid which Disney started developing along with Snow White in the 1930's when he started to develop some of of the classic fairy tales.

The legend, HBD!

The legend ... That ripped off Jack Kirby and gave him a royal knee in the nuts?

Ripped off Jack Kirby? If Jack found his position so disagreeable he was free to pursue something else. Tired of this tired argument. While in college I worked for Disney in a business position. Part of my contract stipulated that even though I was in a non creative capacity that if I did create anything while working for them that they were entitled to ownership of my creation.

If I disagreed with that so much that I felt it was a royal knee in the nuts I would have quit and worked somewhere else...which I eventually did but not because of that reason.

You can quibble with the equitable nature of his colaberation with other creators, but the world of comics as we know it would not exist without his incredible contributions. And spending the latter part of his life as a good will ambassador for comics has in and of itself been a valuable contribution.

Happy birthday, Stan!

What is legendary about Stan Lee - is his royal knee.

He should use his last years to vindicate the genious of Jack Kirby instead of being so busy putting his signature and all those SA keys. Just my 2c
