Comments on Wizard World Los Angeles--Comics vs. Soft Porn???

316 posts in this topic

I really think it's easier for a parent to understand this than for someone without kids. I've only been a parent for four years, but you really look at the world around you differently. You have to watch what you say and do. You can't just watch whatever you want on TV. You want the best for your kids inspite of the many things around us that we don't want negatively impacting our kids. Yes, you can't lock your kids up in the house, but you can try to delay their seeing bad things until they are old enough to understand the difference between right and wrong. And soft-porn at a comic convention is a "wrong" for kids, period.

Yep, parenthood changes almost everything--schedules, habits, attitudes.

This discussion does seem to have a clear dividing line between those who are parents and those who are not, those who are responsible for the lives of others and those responsible for, well, themselves. When that first little bundle of responsibility is born, most of us tend to reevaluate our values and goals. And our values and goals tend to become more conservative, some might even say, more mature.

I think most of us parents are not prudes, but we do realize how utterly empty and worthless porn is. As parents we tend to have high aspirations for our children--their being involved in porn on any level isn't one of them.

Having the more adult-themed exhibits placed in a separate area doesn't seem like too much to ask.

I'm willing to bet that almost all the people posting that seem to have no problem with it have no kids.

I'd also bet that almost all the people that are complaining do have kids.

It's not appropriate for kids of ALL AGES to see HARD CORE PORN, period.

The fact that they hide *some* of it with dots, means nothing.

I'm not saying they shouldn't be there. Just move it to a restricted room, or even behind a curtain.

A picture of a woman with a rubber [#@$%!!!] shoved in her [#@$%!!!], point of entry hidden or not, should not be viewed by CHILDREN.

You dumbarses that think differently, probably do not have children.

There's nothing wrong with it being viewed by adults. Just show some decency and don't flaunt it to the kids.

Funny how the parental advice comes from people that don't have kids. makepoint.gif

I agree completely.... thumbsup2.gif

like i previously posted, you have to be honest with your kids. in that situation you would tell your kids that not all women are like that.

How many kids do you have, and their ages please?

zero. but that doesn't mean i don't have friends with kids. foreheadslap.gif this reminds me of the whole wardrobe malfunction during last years superbowl. tonofbricks.gif a whole bunch of wasted hot air. we have people dying in Iraq and people make a hoopla over a boob on the boob tube? confused-smiley-013.gif no pun intended. thumbsup2.gif

Yeah, it's like a fat white guy at work who tries to tell my black friend that he "knows all about the problems facing visible minorities". He's done the same with problems faced by women, a gay co-worker, etc. and seriously believe that as a hetero honkie, he has any clue.

People who spout gibberish like that have totally lost touch with reality.

Wow, right on track Sensai! It makes me feel good that so many of you feel the same way I do about. Now, what do we do about it? I wonder if Steve Borock, Bob, Storms, Harvey Lee, and Vince Z. prefer it out in the open or not. Would CGC's on-site grading be impacted by simply moving the adult-themed tables to a more discrete spot or floor? Anyone from CGC want to comment (when you get back from said con!)?

Seriously dood, you have no idea, none at all. Don't take that the wrong way, as i thought the same thing as you, then I had a kid and it was back to square one.

It's like me, a white man, telling a black guy I know how racial intolerance feels. You've got to live it to understand it.

This goes back to expectations. The Super Bowl is the most watched program on TV. It is a family and community event. There are expectations on the content when it is broadcast at 5 pm on broadcast TV.

There are different expectations if one were to order the PPV lingerie bowl during half-time. You know what you are getting because it's advertised as such.

Tango is quite correct here. It's like trying to explain scuba diving, flying, or even sex to someone. You just can't do it justice until you have experienced the joys and frustrations of parenthood. Of course, in my opinion, being a father is the greatest possible blessing!

You sure you were at a comics covention?

I don't recall seeing any hard porn at the conventions I have been to. If that is the case then it shouldn't be at a comics show or at least not out in the open for children to see. Did you confront the person displaying the art or the person in charge of the show about the hardcore porn? As an alternative I would suggest going to some of the smaller comic expos with your kids where you will almost never see any scantily clad women and/or provocative art on display. Everyone sensitivities are different. What you might have a problem with another parent might not.

Regardless of the fact that I am a dad, I can't believe you guys who aren't parents saying that it is cool. Do you take your wives and girlfriends with you? My wife is no prude but she would have no interest in attending an event that had pornstars in full view. I just don't need to be part of a hobby that I can't include my family in.

And as for those who suggest that they would explain to their kids about sex.....well what sort of sex are you going to teach them? Do you want them to think that their mom dresses up like that each night with a whip for you to get your jollies.

I live in a very laid back society and I can assure you that this sort of stuff was around when I was a kid but my dad didn't deem it necessary to drag me into the brothel's and strip joints to aid my sex education.

And the kids will likely be bored to death. This is like putting Snow White into a bikini and thongs on mainstreet Disneyland and telling parents if they are offended, they should take their kids to a state fair.

This a showcase for the comic book industry. Perhaps those that have a penchant for the more adult aspects of the industry should try smaller expos and advertise them as such.

Supa,

Are you disagreeing simply to disagree? Do you really think it would be a big deal to separate the adult-themed stuff from the family friendly stuff?

V/R,

Mike

P.S. Are you one of those that really thinks the wardrobe malfunction wasn't planned? I suppose Ms. Jackson always wears pasties...

Yeah, I don't have kids, but I surely HOPE my views would remain the same if I did have kids.

OK, for those that do have kids that are now aware of these scantily clad con babes, DO NOT BRING YOUR KIDS TO ANY MORE OF THESE CONVENTIONS!

Sure, make a fuss and try to get it stopped if you want, but if you are so opposed to it at this time, do not subject your children to more corruption by putting them at risk by witnessing any more of these girls at future cons. Too bad it has to be that way? Perhaps, but as long as it is, don't bring your kids, problem solved.

Yeah, I admit it, I love seeing scantily clad chicks at cons. I don't buy their products, but yeah, I love the view when I walk by. I am very happily married to a beautiful woman, so I am not some dateless chump either. I also know just as many married guys, or guys with girlfriends that like this kind of stuff as the "dateless geeks" that many of you have spoken about in this thread. NOT only dateless chumps like this stuff NOR just guys that "can't get any".

For those embarassed about telling people about your comic hobby because you feel you will be lumped in with the dirty old men crowd, then maybe you should do a little bit better in telling your friends why you love the hobby. Outside of a few people that I've run into thinking comics were mainly a kids hobby, I've never received any weird looks or strange comments. And after I explain to them why I love the hobby, most become very interested in it and want to know more about it.

For those that think these con babes are just fantasies, or are not what "real women" are really like, well... you are quite wrong. Although not all of them are knockouts, the 9s and 10s that we do see at cons, all full of silicon and etc. are very real. These beautiful buxom women DO exist. It's not a fantasy, some men get lucky enough to marry a "10". These girls may not exemplify the average woman, but they are certainly part of the population and are attainable to those that seek them out and are lucky enough to attain such a beauty. Remember guys, SOMEBODY was lucky enough to go out with one of those three hottest girls in school that we all dreamed about.

As I stated earlier in this thread, it just boggles my mind how big of a deal that some people make this when they seem to accept all the violence depicted in comics and at conventions which are 100% MORE appealing to young boys that any half naked chicks. Again, can any of you parents explain why the violence depicted is not as big of a deal as the scantily clad girls? You don't see a problem with Stormtroopers walking around carrying big guns in front of your kids but you do have a problem with Aria's cleavage and her censored photos? confused-smiley-013.gif

I would have a problem if stormtroopers were presented as good guys and it was OK to go around killing and suppressing people because you have the ability to do so. Thankfully, there are heroes who fight the bad guys and protect those that can't, even if they have to use violence.

Excelsior,

I'm not talking about the kind of thing most reasonable people would argue about. I'm talking about pictures/drawings with nothing to the imagination at eye level of my 4-yr-old. Not to mention the young lady bending over with nothing but her g-string between her and you know what. That's over-the-top for the main floor area of a comic convention--in my humble opinion.

V/R,

Mike
