What truly makes a book valuable?

89 posts in this topic

In terms of monetary value,

High grade means nothing if no one wants it.

Significance means nothing if no one wants it.

Only having two of something in existence means nothing if no one wants it.

Basically it's demand/supply * value = price. Value is dependent on the "why" of the demand. There have been books with limited print runs that have little demand (some Aspen books come to mind) that go for relatively little value in high grade. Highly hyped books (like those from movie/tv) will have high demand due to a high implied value which generates a high price. Supply may have little to do with that if the book is highly valued. First appearance of Deadpool or Harley Quinn comes to mind.

Right-that's the significance element. If there are many copies, but more people want them than are available, that is the rarity element. Condition is important-a coverless BA 12 won't be worth much.

I repeat;

Significance

Demand

Rarity

Condition

Demand above all else. If supply remains high then prices don't skyrocket. Condition, rarity, and significance mean little without demand

There's a huge demand for nuts and bolts. So much so that nearly everyone has them in their house. They are not valuable. None of the elements means anything without the others.

Okay. So says the board king of misinformation. When an economist wants to chime it, I'll listen. You? not so much

Or, you could just show me wrong. I got that 'misinformation' from the brothers on antiques roadshow. Yeah you know more than them. (thumbs u

Yeah you're an expert (thumbs u

You just proved my point thx.

Yes folks all 4 elements are needed to make something valuable.

You start with demand. No demand means the other stuff doesn't matter much

Or you could start with significance. There won't be any demand without significance. Or you could start with rarity. There won't be any value if supply exceeds demand.

Supply and Demand are all that matter

Except demand is based on....significance and rarity and condition!!!

Essentially I am arguing a physical object needs 3 dimensions and folks are saying well height is most important-you can't have length and width without height.....

But the one thing that you keep missing is that without demand, rarity doesn't equal monetary value. There are plenty of rare comics that aren't worth much and don't have lots of people looking for them.

There are also highly significant comics that are not in demand.

This is true. There are also comics that are in demand that are not valuable-what is the print runs of some worthless books? yet people are buying them. There's a 'demand'. I never said rarity alone makes something valuable. I have said repeatedly there are 4 elements to value. I did not make this up, I learned it from watching antiques roadshow.

No. Demand is separate from those things

Can rarity compliment demand? Yes, it can. It can also have zero effect on demand. That's why I say it all starts with demand.

At the risk of sounding like an individual_without_enough_empathy, you might want to study economics a little more than that. Am I an expert? No. However, I would not base my entire argument on knowledge learned from viewing Antiques Roadshow.

Economics is a bit different from collectibles. Supply and demand for products and services do not have the same components. People buy corn for different reasons than vintage comics.

No, price is a function of Supply and Demand

Significance is just a function of demand (what drives people to want these?)

Rarity is a function of supply (how many are there?)

Condition is a function of supply (how many are there in X condition?)

You just proved my point. Value is based on 4 elements. They are intertwined. Of course everything can be reduced to supply and demand. It just sounds dumb to say 'value in comics is based on supply vs demand'. I think the OP wanted a bit more than that.
