New DC Comics logo

Biased by many fond memories of 70s covers, in my case, even though it's a very simple logo design.

In my professional opinion... it's a huge fail.

In my professional opinion... The last couple logos before has been a huge fail. 2c

The last version, with the page, I thought was OK, and lent itself well to multimedia.

2012 was by far the worst! What where they thinking?

That 'peeling-off' effect doesn't work at all for me.

DC was told they can't use a star in their logo as it was trademark infringement

No kidding?? I thought it strange since their 1976 logo has four stars in there, and that is before the 2005 logo. So... They had it quite long time until the change-over.

Who say that DC can't use a star? hm

The problem is it is hard to critique logos for a corporation because they have board meeting after board meeting and it hard for good design to survive all those brainless managers that think they know what is best and won't trust a logo designer to do his or hers job. They want to have their "mark" the way "they" envision it wile licking their thumb and slapping their seal on it. They enjoy sitting in failure, as long as it's "their" failure.

I've did some pro bono charity work designing logos for companies that I knew were 100% the best they could ever get. But were turned away simply because they weren't part of the process...

I couldn't even GIVE a solid mark away that would've made their company successful and represented them the best they could've ever imagined.

So their you have it folks. Corporations only allow an ad agency to be creative when they want them to. Sock them the money to design the slop they want and the world turns.

In the world of design and branding, Pentagram is an EPIC company... but then so was LANDOR... but then so was Milton Glaser.

These companies/designers are not cheap. DC is forking out huge bucks hiring these internationally renowned brand specialists. The strength of a brand is not necessarily in the mark but rather how it's used.

My main complaint is that DC is changing their logo to often... and that they didn't hire me! Talk about a dream job for a designer who happens to be a comic fan.

Here's the story about why DC Comics can (supposedly) no longer use stars in their logo:

Sometimes it doesn't pay to bully the little guy

This can't be true and is COMPLETELY idiotic if so. The 2 shapes don't resemble each other at all; the only thing they have in common is you can call them both stars. Great story though.
