9.6 With Slight Spine Roll?

12 posts in this topic

First post. Thanks for having me.

Just picked up a bronze age issue which was "graded" at 9.6. It has a couple of small non color breaking dents on the cover which are OK... but there is a very slight spine roll practically throughout. It doesn't seem like "normal" spine roll to me. If I submitted, would I come back at 9.4 or lower because of this spine roll?

Thanks.

Welcome to the boards! (thumbs u

It sounds unlikely that it's a 9.6, but if you want opinions on the spine issue you'd be better served posting full front/back scans of the book.

eBay seller. As I am new on this forum... do we have a policy about posting the names of sellers?

Thanks again for the help...

You can post the name of the seller up (if you aren't intentionally trying to smear the seller's name) but in order to show transparency, you would have to post up a link to the ebay item number.

I am not suggesting you in the wrong here, at all, so don't get that impression.

As far as the grade, even if the book were dry cleaned & pressed, it would not come close to a 9.6.

With the rust on the staples, as light as it is, expect a grade of 8.0, if pressed.

It is basically a $10 book so if you paid real money for it, initiate a return.

Doesn't look like a spine roll to me. This old books are like that once you've stacked them on top of each other like that. I used to see this right off the rack when I was a kid.

I actually don't mind see these on my books. It's a good indicator the book hasn't been pressed and the centerfold pages hasn't been crush-folded to the point of separating.

I'm thinking CGC will hammer the grade more for that slight discoloration of staples and rust migration than the spine. I've seen 9.9's with between a 1/8" and 1/4" miswrap and rolls can be pressed out.

I had a book that structurally and visually was a 9.0 SA book that was kicked down to a 5.5 for rusty staples but luckily no migration. Not sure what the downgrade for slight discoloration with slight migration would be.
