Reform School Girl

22 posts in this topic

I sold Tommyfoxwood some low-grade GA books and of all the sales I made, only he complained about the condition. He returned a Wonder 15 that I graded F/VF and I could tell his reasoning was simply because he had buyer's remorse for paying too much. He also asked for an adjustment on a Silver Streak NN. I gave in both times because he wasn't happy, but no one else has complained...just him.

Sounds like he has some dough though and isn't afraid to bid. His name refers to his living in Connecticut near the Foxwoods Casino.

I hate that mentality of bidding high on a book with the idea of it's not really sweet when received, return it or beat the seller down by trying to get a partial refund. It takes a lot for me to return a book, as my expectations on most books are they are off by a half grade, and only on grossly overgraded stuff do I call out the seller. I notice some ebayers bid on just about every GA key or HG semi-key, sometimes to ridiculous levels, as if they must get every GA book that exists by next week, and wonder how they can do that. These guys are playing by a different set of rules.

I won't deny that Reform School Girls is a very neat book, but why almost 4k for a fine copy? It's very weird to me how this particular comic has such clamor for it, when the cover is not all that much different from the pulp novels that can be had on ebay in midgrade any day of the week for about 10 bucks. Does anybody else feel this way, or am I speaking sacrilege here?

I agree with that, even though as GGA covers go, it's pretty good. Some books develop this mystique that makes them skyrocket in price regardless of supply - it's not as if it's the only exploitation comic of the era.

I'll second that. I remember even as a 12 year old kid in the early 1970s with my first Overstreet, "Reform School Girl" was a comic to be had. It was sort of an icon of the whole GGA thing, and apparently still is.

Tommyfoxwood has blown me out of the water. I don't even bid when that guy's around. By the way Moondog, I purchased 3 GGA books from you a couple of months ago, and was pleased with the transaction. thumbsup2.gif

I agree with your approach. If I receive a raw book that's accurately graded then I'm ecstatic, if it's overgraded by a half or full grade then I'm satisfied (since that's what I expected anyway), and if it's overly graded, restored, detached, etc., I'll e-mail the seller with my complaint.

Overstreet had Reform School Girl pictured in a lot of his early guides. Also it was used in SOTI and Overstreet commented on it as being "Rare" so I guess that whips us collectors into a frenzy. That being said, I wouldn't drop that kind of coin on a book that had such lousy scans in the auction. Tommy must like to gamble on comics as well as at the casinos!

I agree - while the scans of the interior stories look pretty cool - I've got the b/w reprint around somewhere and should reread it - the cover is a reprint of a paperback, and a photo cover (blech) to boot. Due to the subject matter it's the type of book that would normally interest me, but not at the prices in the guide, let alone in this auction. I'm just not fond of photo covers on comic books.
