2016 CGC Green Eggs Grading Contest - Round 3 Results

43 posts in this topic

On the Fantastic Comics 5, the cover is not only detachet, but also completely split.

That is viewable in the scan. :headbang:

Oops. I guess that is where I went wrong on this one. Note to self: don't use phone for grading contests.

I missed that the cover was completely split. As if that book needed additional odd condition issues on top of having to consider golden age bumps etc. tough book. For as much as it wrong with it, it sure presents nicely in the slab. Not sure I would ever take it out of there though.

I might take it out, tape it back together, and resubmit it for next year's contest. hm

It looks like the loose front cover is shifted down half an inch, and somehow got wedged at the bottom of the slab (yikes) . You can see on the back cover scan that the front cover is peeking out at the bottom. It's so unusual that it's hard to know what you're looking at. I definitely didn't catch it when the scans were first posted.

Either people missed this or their subconscious blocked it to avoid long term trauma.

I scored it 0.5 because it was both split *and* had brittle paper, and I figured either defect alone meant it would grade 1.0.

But now I wonder if either major defect alone was enough for 1.0. Can a brittle book get 1.5? Can a detached/split cover get a 1.5?

Me as well. Even looking at it now, knowing it's split I can't see it.

Really?

On the front, you see a half inch strip of the book inside. So that's weird. Could it be a miscut? Hmmmm, have to look at the back and see if anything looks odd. What the heck is going on there?? The front cover is resting lower than the rest of the book? The micro chamber paper is showing? hmdoh! The cover is frikken split! That's got to be it!!

I mean, you do have to investigate the pictures. And I would say that it'd be difficult to spot on your phone.

:foryou:

Oh, and I put "cover detached" as that's CGC's notes on the label.

If the cover was split and lined up evenly with the rest of the book, I would have mentioned it, as it wouldn't have been noticeable in the scans.

I figured it out, I just can't get any of the other grades right lol

I usually take 0.5 to be for incomplete books, pages missing, so I couldn't be that harsh with it. I missed the vertical separation of the cover. doh!

It was visible on the phone, you just had to put two and two together.

At first I though the strip of tan on the front was because the detatched cover had shifted down, check, then looking at the back cover, there's the tan and micro chamber paper, check.

It took a few more looks for my brain to register one was at the top one at the bottom.

Then I overgraded it by .5 lol
