How does Loose Centerfold affect grade on GA books?

27 posts in this topic

I wonder how long it will be before it's allowed in 9.0?

I think it depends on how many staples the book has.

I don't know that I'd ever expect to see a single stapled book with loose centerfold grade a 9.0+ but one loose staple on a two or three stapled book is common in the lower NM range.

Does the 8.0 book have just 1 staple?

Mike, I don't know. That's why I qualified my whole statement.

Maybe someone else knows?

Or maybe that book was exceptionally nice in hand?

Or, maybe extra tough books get a bit of a bump. I know Borock and Haspel used to weight tough books a little lighter than common books.

Sorry but I again repeat how these types of threads are nothing more than intellectual 'What If' conversations. There are no grading rules, there is no CGC handbook, no Rules of Thumb. The fact is there are simply opinions, by different graders, in different eras. Is the highest grade with a detached centerfold a 6.5,7.0, or a 9.0 ? The answer is yes, all 3 are correct.

8.0 is the highest I've seen with a detached CF.

I understood a detached CF to cost the book 2 points (8.0 down to 6.0) although obviously in this case that math breaks down.

Maybe instead of 2 full points it is really 4 grade steps.

I.e. 8.0 is otherwise 9.4; 6.0 is otherwise 8.0, etc.

Those are different "point" values but the same number of grade increments.
