What are the Key Bronze age Horror comics?

123 posts in this topic

Comic books only...

Figured this would grab the attention of not just Horror collectors, but those who may have others to include.

Are there too many to list?

I'm just trying to get a list of all (if not most) of the key Bronze Horror titles.

Between ebay, here and there; there's just too many scattered places to look and it's giving me a headache.

Would like to have a nice litte/large consolidated list in one place.

Thanks for the help!

As far as comics go. HoS #92 should be right near the top.

Yes sir, comics only. I fixed it.

First Swamp Thing. I knew that one.

Other than 1st Abel HoS 81and the one you mentioned Oak, I can't think of any other keys besides hard to grade covers.

There's gotta be other keys pretraining to at least some of the artists no? 1st Wrightson, Kaluta, Mike Ploog, etc...

Instead of keys maybe it's all about the covers?

Gimme something :wishluck:

When it comes to horror comics, the "key" books aren't always the same as they are in the world of tights and superpowers.

If you look at precode horror books, conventional wisdom would dictate that the only real keys should be things like the first Crypt Keeper, first CK origin, etc. Higher grade, non-Gaines copies of his first appearance in Crime Patrol 15 will run you around $10k-ish.

Then you have Punch Comics 12. There is nothing key about this book, content-wise. No first appearance, no pivotal plot line...the only thing going for it, apart from scarcity, is the cover. Last year a 7.5 copy (not the highest graded, but close) sold for....$28k. Because of the cover.

Since cover art drives so much of the market with the advent of CGC, I think that is where any search for key horror should start. I draw the parallel to PCH horror because the early 70s saw an easing of the comics code, so the covers started featuring skeletons, zombies, and could really show off the talents of the artists involved. And the Bronze Age has some amazing cover artists: Wrightson, Kaluta, Adams, Dominguez, Cardy, Sparling....

Just my 2 cents.

#1 is a good one as it is a hard to find picture frame with great Steranko art.

I've been collecting DC BA horror for awhile now. Here's what I like...

Dark Mansion of Forbidden Love 1, 5 (becomes Forbidden Tales of Dark Mansion)

Ghosts 1

Witching Hour 1, 5 (Wrightson), 85 (final issue, tough in HG)

Weird War Tales 1, 93 (1st Creature Commandos)

House of Mystery 174 (1st new format), 175 (1st Cain), 179 (1st Wrightson) All Wrightson covers are sought after, perhaps 236 the most? 290 (1st I, Vampire)

House of Secrets 81 (1st New format, Abel is host), 92 (1st Swamp Thing), all Wrightson covers esp. 100

Sinister House of Secret Love 1, 5 (becomes Secrets of Sinister House), 6 (Cain, Abel, 1st Eve)

Secrets of Haunted House 31 (1st Mister E)

Weird Mystery Tales 21 (fantastic Wrightson werewolf cover)

Is Tales of Suspense 51 not first Scarecrow?

Lots of great Marvel books already mentioned, but don't forget the B&W magazines!

In addition to Savage Tales 1, you should check out --

Dracula Lives 1

Tales of the Zombie 1

Vampire Tales 1

These are short runs to collect with great stories and art!

I know that, don't know why I typed "1" instead of "5" Funny thing with issue #1 is that it's the same 'IT" logo they used for It The Living Colossus in Astonishing tales, guess they really liked it and didn't wanna waste it. Issue #2 is another nice Steranko cover as well
