Looks like very moderate spine stress and the lower corners are slightly blunted. Nice book and nice avatar.

what is going on with the upper left corner on the back cover? It's hard to read.

That's much clearer. It sort of radiates out of that corner like a ripple in water. Does it affect any of the content pages?

 Based on that, I'd be more inclined to a 8.0-8.5.

As it sits the upper left corner of the back cover will probably keep you at an 8.0.  There's also a bit of edge wear on the bottom, spine ticks and some blunting on the lower corners.  I think a clean/press could tighten up that top left corner of the BC if the fibers are intact.  A press would also clean up the some of the blunting on the bottom spine side.  Maybe strengthen an 8.5 or possibly a 9.0.

I agree, that corner drops it to 8.5 at best I think.
