Correction Fluid on pre-1956 art

According to Google correction fluid was invented in 1956. I was curious if people just used white paint before this as I was looking at OA from the 40s with what appears to be white-out in use. This is a piece that I cannot imagine anyone faking (low value). Curious what people had to say about this.
