Both of these guys have made nice $$$ of the EC empire. It's hard to side with either of them at this point.

The reason Russ dragged CBM into the publishing abyss was because he was

isolated in West Plains, Mo and never contacted the 'real' comic collectors and hobbyists like Carter did....

Carter was one of us collectors...

Russ...from another generation not in touch with current fandom

and another thing...no advertising in the mag other than Gemstone's..

that's always a problem, eh?

Good read. Love Feldstein, a real creator not just a re-printer. CBM under Cochran certainly did jump the shark.

The Cochran/Gaines relationship always reminded me of the Evanier/Kirby team with regards to their views of past (or even current) events.

 

Al's dead now so hopefully they can all peacefully find their places in comics history without fighting for that last inch of fame or dollars.

Russ I think was overly defensive in taking Gaines' POV and it put him at great loggerheads with Al. As to his editorship of CBM, heck, I liked it -- but then, I'm an EC guy.

I wasn't a fan of the way he ran CBM - to me there was an immediate drop in quality when Carter left. But, that's OK, Gary set a high bar and Russ contributed in many other ways to the hobby
