Spider-Man? Batman? Why is the Silver Age so special? What about "modern" comics? Aren't they more important?

No, you don't.

This.

Closest thing to a serious answer I would give is diversify.  Go after a lot of first appearances of superheroes that likely will be next up to star in a movie/tv show.  Grab keys from the GA/SA eras that have done nothing but climb.  Buy a couple of collections just so you have something to play with :) You will have a lot of things that lose some value but those should be offset by a few that gain.

agreed!

With far less than a million one could buy a new (spare) house with a four car garage and then buy one of those 200 long box collections of drek that are offered now and then , and then at least you would have a place to store the drek and the house might appreciate in value too !!

Buy a really nice house in nice neighborhoods with GREAT school districts, preferably on the coasts near major cities.  Rent the house out to rich foreigners who send their wives and kids to America for school.  Collect rent, pay taxes, watch your home value appreciate at the same time while you take the tax deductions.  No mortgage, so its all profit.  You can net $3-$5K per month on rent AFTER taxes, BUT at the same time your house is likely gaining value.  You can invest that $30K profit per year into comics you like.  Bonus tip:  Before you sell the house, try to live there for at least 2 years so you can exclude some of the gain (which there definitely will be because you took the depreciation deduction).
